Guest greytbookert
It's been a battle with Adam's nails... and now he just ripped one off while running in the mud. We've cleaned it, basically got it to stop bleeding with Quick Stop... Now what do we do? Vet is closed on Sundays. I know many of you have been through this, so all opinions are welcome. Batmom
If he broke it off down into the nailbed, vet might want to have a look but usually not much to do except keep clean and maybe give antibiotics since feet are such dirty places. Adam might appreciate some padding in that area so he doesn't bump it on something until it's healed a bit. Guest greytbookert
Unfortunately, most vets in the area are closed on Sundays, of course! If we keep it clean and wrapped, do you think he'll be ok until tomorrow? Otherwise, we can try to find a vet that is open and can see us. I'd feel bad calling our vet at home to look at something that can wait until the morning. DH goes in at 6am and the vets are there by 7am. and yes, i think it is down to the nail bed. There is just a little stumpy thing on it. We do have a Therapaw, maybe I'll try and get that on him in a bit, once he settles down. He is unhappy with us right now Edited March 14, 2010 by greytbookert
Batmom
Oh, no reason he should need to go in today unless it's splurting blood and you can't get it stopped. Your vet might not even want to see him, but if DH is going and Adam likes going out and about, won't hurt to take him. If it's down into the nailbed sometimes you want to trim it up a little to help it grow out neatly. ETA: Sock with some extra padding in the toe might work better than the therapaw as you don't want to put any pressure on that area and get it started bleeding again. Don't forget, if in doubt, muzzle first! Some dogs don't seem to notice broken toenails or react much to injuries there, others do. Guest greytbookert
Thanks Batmom! You are the voice of reason, as always! Adam's nails have been a constant battle since he came to us in November. We've trimmed bits, dremmeled but his nails are very strange looking. Some look kind of peely (I know that isn't a word ) and brittle and the nail itself is separated from the quick. Very hard to explain. Oh, no reason he should need to go in today unless it's splurting blood and you can't get it stopped. I wouldn't attempt anything with his toes without it! He is not a happy camper when it comes to playing around with his feet! I've got some socks, I'll see if I can rig something up when he settles down a bit.
Batmom
You've considered SLO? I think some dogs, it only ever affects the nails. I could be wrong tho. Guest DoofBert
Our Bacchus ripped a nail.. We got the bleeding stopped and had the vet look at it the following day (these things always happen on Sunday!) Anyway, we didn't even need antibitiotics... were just to told to watch it....vet wrapped it good and gave me a refresher course on how to wrap a hurt foot. He also reminded me to keep the bandage and foot dry. We rigged up freezer bag. ... worked rather well. Things healed without problem and nail has grown...... Good luck!! Guest greytbookert
You've considered SLO? I think some dogs, it only ever affects the nails. I could be wrong tho. I think it is SLO but I don't know too much about it. I'm doing some reading now Thanks Doofbert, I think we will watch it today and see how he does. I know we've used old IV bags to keep clean and dry in the past, so we'll use a freezer bag today and get an IV bag tomorrow. Really, why do these things happen on Sundays! Guest SoulsMom
Ah crap Poor Adam. As you know, Soul went through this. Split it all the way to the nail bed. I got the bleeding stopped and kept it wrapped until I could take him to the vet the next day. They had to take the whole thing off. ETA: If you really want him to be seen today VCA Westboro is open Wish I didn't have to stay home today to pump water out of the basement. I have an IV bag you could use

The good news is that he is on raw, we'll add in Vitamin E, he already gets Fish oil we'll just up his dosage!
Guest SoulsMom
Actually I have not ulterior motive, Dr Schettino isn't in today Well, if it's just a stump I'd imagine they'd really only give you antibiotics since there is nothing to remove Poor Adam. Did he scream?
Guest ctgreylover
poor boy - I remember his nails being so "transparent". Give him a hug and a few extra kisses from me and Cassandra

Did he scream? He took off to chase squirrels and birds with Cindy, then he peed. Then he was at the front door with a pool of blood at his feet. He only got vocal when we started to clean it and stop the bleeding. He is resting right now and seems a little put out but nothing more than a pout. poor kid. I just printed out SLO information and we'll be bringing to Wick tomorrow.
Guest greytbookert
Does this look like SLO? These aren't his hurt nails but his other feet.
