She'd had breathing problems for a while and despite some intensive investigations we could not work out why. We now know she had a large dense tumour next to her heart spreading upwards to her windpipe. In fact it was pushing her windpipe so much you could see a significant bend in it. An endoscopy revealed her windpipe was also being squashed and the opening was barely big enough for the scope to pass through. The vet was amazed she'd been able to eat for so long. When we first decided we wanted a greyhound I was dubious - they're boring with no personality I told my wife. Well Sarah proved me wrong, she had more personality than a lot of people I know. She was beautiful, feisty, demanding and yet loving and gentle with us. We had some dominance issues at first - she wanted to rule the roost. Once we sorted out that little problem she started to relax and enjoy life, perhaps for the first time. We saw a little more of her personality every day. After 18 months she'd relaxed enough to lie on her back and show us her belly. At first she did not want affection or cuddles or to play - she didn't know how to play. Four years on she couldn't get enough cuddles and once you started she wouldn't let you stop until she'd had enough. No one told her greyhounds don't bark. No one told her greyhounds aren't territorial - just ask the fox and crows that visit our garden. Not to mention the time she began a one dog defence of my son and I from two loose Dobermans.
