Batman’s Mom

Reko Zema by Mo Kick x Reko Princess

Reko Zema descends from the powerful Lindy Lil>Wild Nancy family, anchored by LL’s Deeny, who is a most interesting study, as we look to both her first 2 damsires….Koliga and Oklahoman, each winners of the American Derby.

Most of the dynasty of greyhounds you come across in pedigrees, carrying the “LLs” prefix, are members of the Wild Nancy family. They are the direct female ancestors to a number of excellent track greyhounds and superb breeders, foremost among them today, leading sire Wigwam Wag (Understood x Js C Penny)….. multiple Texas stakes winner, now at stud, Graceland Blaze (Ps Raising Cain x Lissas Diamond)…..1994 Hollywoodian stakes winner Chick’s Racey (Oshkosh Racey x Chicks Donna), also at stud…..and Conched Out (Chevy Montecarlo x CC Sassy Sis), a little known but high-strike-rate sire, who is from the same branch of this extensive family, as is Reko Zema….as they each carry Ponca Sis as their 2nd dam.

Before their emergence, distinguished Wild Nancy family performers and breeders included….OK Troy (Rooster Cogburn x Wise Hanna), a Seabrook Great Race winner…… Kiowa Andrew (Oklahoma Randy x Sadie Cascade), a superb racer and sire….. LLs Doug (Douglas Chapin x LLs Deeny), who won over 100 races….. and Solomon Sol, by Johnny Leonard x Wild Nancy, the first great sire to emerge from this hugely influential family.

He’s My Man, the damsire to Reko Zema, brings in the redoubtable Wize Liz>Transpat family of the superb Gable Dodge into the mix. He’s My Man was a sire of accomplishment himself, being the damsire to, among others, the recently retired Dodgem By Design (Gable Dodge x Cruisin By Design), who defeated the great Talentedmrripley in stakes final competition.

Reko Zema’s sire is the enigmatic Mo Kick, a 3-time All American and captain of the team, who won over 100 races and is from the distinguished Irish female family of Sallys Gossip….also the family of the marvelous Share Profit (Monalee Champion x Ballybeg Pride), who is the 2nd damsire to He’s My Man.

Batman’s Mom

Reko Batman by Trouper Zeke x Marque Louisiana

The first thing that one notices about this pedigree is the inbreeding to the fine greyhound Wincarnis, who is the sire of each of Reko Batman’s parents. This is an unusually close breeding.

Reko Batman descends from the female family Headstrong, whom we have previously discussed, and who is the direct female family ancestor to American Derby winner Golden In and the fine sire, Electric Torch…..and also to Flying Clem, who is the 2nd damsire to Mo Kick, the sire of Reko Zema.

Wincarnis, obviously the focus of the pedigree of Reko Batman, carries the great Miss Gorgeous as 2nd dam……Miss Gorgeous is probably the most influential female from our most influential domestic female family, that of the great Royal Princess.

The fact that he is also by one of the all time great track greyhounds who ever drew breath, Ks Flak, makes me believe that the 2x2 inbreeding to Wincarnis might have been designed to intensify the presence of Gorgeous Babe (Chief Havoc x Daisy Rock), who is the dam of Tell You Why----the sire of Miss Gorgeous---and to Magic Babe, a sibling to Tell you Why, and the sire of Elsie Moss---who is the dam of Max Moss, the damsire to Ks Flak.

And we can see this same dynamic at work, via SS Jeno, maternal grandsire to Trouper Zeke-----SS Jeno’s damsire is another Rocket Jet/Gorgeous Babe sibling, Metal Jet…..

Trouper Zeke, for his part, is from a very strong Irish family, linked to matriarch Cottage Daisy….this is also the family of Sunbow and Air Patrol, brothers by Prairie Flash X Dainty Sister, who were very influential sires in the USA, during the 1970s.

Note: as a bit of an editorial comment here, Batman’s Mom…..it strikes me as curious as to why the breeder did not breed Marque Louisiana to Mo Kick (who share a number of pedigree commonalities)----what a splendid pedigree that would have been-----use the “testmating” function at greyhound-data.com to see what I mean.

Rainier Restive by EJs Douglas x Rainier Rowanda

This greyhound could well be a bit of a “snob”….particularly if she realizes that she is from perhaps the most regal strain of perhaps the most regal family in the greyhound racing world.

Rainier Rowanda carries Monalee Tiny (Prairie Flash x Sheila At Last), the half sibling to none other than Monalee Champion (Crazy Parachute x Sheila At Last), as her 6th dam. This makes her a member of the same direct branch of the family of the dog who is arguably the greatest sire who ever lived.

Simply try to find a modern day pedigree of a top racer in Ireland, the UK or the US, which does not contain an infusion of Monalee Champion---or one of his siblings…..it’s like trying to find hogs in tuxedos……

The matriarch of this family, Sheila At Last (The Grand Prince x Last Landing), had successful litters by 3 different sires, and many of those offsprings were not only fine racers, but influential breeders….but none could even dream of what influence Monalee Champion, an English Derby winner, was to exert upon the breed, here and in Europe. Incidentally, as a matter of interest, Monalee Champion's sire, Crazy Parachute----is from the same female family that gave us 2 time All American Team Captain, the recently retired-to-stud Talentedmrripley (Greys Statesman x Oneco Malee).

We can’t begin to do Monalee Champion justice in these short frames, but in the USA, he is either the sire or the grandsire to about 500 stakes competitive or stakes winning greyhounds, among them, the great Wild Breeze (Ostracized x All Heart), Spartan Sun (Share Profit x Smooth Marie), winner of the Wonderland Derby, All American captain, WDs Chris (Fast Company x Hill Gale), and the imported Can’t Decide (Monalee Champion x Doon Road Fly), winner of the first Hollywood World Classic……the list is enormous, but to synopsize-----Share Profit (Monalee Champion x Ballybeg Pride) has been our most prolific carrier of Monalee Champion blood.

One might expect that with the emergence of a sire of this profound influence, that the female family’s prospects might be somewhat compromised------and indeed, there has been some compression. But the family has persevered------some would say even flourished----in spite of its astonishing success through male carriers of the family.

And here in the US, from the female family of Sheila At Last, we see Elegant Eli (King Kev x OKs Plead), a contemporary sire of some note……Ski’s Gallo (My Unicorn x Sweet Deal), an All American, and also a sire of some repute……and the stunning and aspiring sire, Prima Gold Tone (Molotov x Golden Bea)….(get a look at this fellow on greyhound-data.com)

Damsire to Ranier Restive, Aus Ready Freddie, is an Australian, and is from the female family that is represented today----both down under and in the US, thanks to the miracle of frozen semen technology----by the extraordinary racer and young sire, Dalalla (Worthy Reward x Alaureena).

EJs Douglas, sire of Rainier Restive, is a 2-time Rural Rube Award winner as the best sprinter in America, and yet another member of the Royal Princess family-----which might very well be our domestic counterpart to the Irish family of Sheila At Last-----and her son, Monalee Champion…..who, just in case you hadn’t noticed, is the damsire to Wild Breeze....the damsire to Hey Vern.....who is the damsire to EJs Douglas.

This family today, is represented by the active racers, the excellent Gable Judges and Gable Revelation (Gable Dodge x CJ Wake Up Grace), who might be worth keeping an eye on....as they share with EG Raisin Bran, the common family ancestor Brose, who is their 3rd dam, and the 2nd dam to EG Raisin Bran.

This is part of the bible litter from the Gable Kennel who used to run here at Gulf. They moved to Wheeling...

Cals Madhatter by My Rooster x My Chantily

The Kinto Girl>Michigan Vickey family from which Cals Madhatter descends, can be traced back to an 1841 female named Gossamer, making it one of the most well-documented families we have on record. That is not necessary for our purposes here, because this family continues to electrify the greyhound world, through the racing performances of it’s many fine members, some of whom are held in the highest echelons of racing performance history.

The emergence of Hall of Fame stayer Ps Rambling (Profits Andy x Ps Skelly) alone would have been enough to sanctify this family in the minds and hearts of the breeding community, but it has done more than that. PL Greer (SS Jeno x Colonel Vickey), an American Derby winner in 1977, and a 2 time Flashy Sir Award winner, had emerged prior to Ps Rambling.

And before that, we saw the emergence of Wade Tray Ample Time x Silver Tray), a perennial stakes competitor, a sire of some importance, and the damsire to 1978 national win leader Merlin C Miller.

Today we see Ps Raising Cain (Raising Dust x Ps Fulbright) carrying the family torch, near the top of the sire standings for several years running. Beckam Pay Day (Jocks Warrior x Twistee), a Rural Rube Award winner, is also from the direct Michigan Vickey branch of this family from which Cals Madhatter also descends. Currently active as a racer, is Portland stakes winner BF Harvey (CJ Pepto Geno x Turkee Jerky).

Damsire to Cals Madhatter, HBs Commander, a dominant sire in the recent history of breeding, brings in several doses of the Miss Judy family, through his tail female line, and through the his sire Akbar, who is also from this family----which we have elaborated upon in several other of these articles.

The regally bred My Rooster is from the storied Inler May family of Ireland, and through Pat Dalton’s Maythorn Pride, and her “blue hen” daughter, Miss Hilary……who is the 2nd dam to My Rooster and the dam of Planet Boy, the 2nd damsire to Cals Madhatter.

My Bocephus, the sire of My Rooster, carries Rooster Cogburn, a son of Miss Gorgeous and a foremost exponent of the Royal Princess family, as his damsire……his sibling, Sand Man, is the sire of Miss Hilary.

That is some fine linebreeding.

Nitro TB Boss by Wigwam Hoss x TB Black Wind

This is an interesting pedigree, and the female family is a “homebred” branch of the great Fawn Rita family.

The crowning achievement of this particular branch, is the sire Chief Cash by Rocket Fire x Clara Cluck, who is also the 8th dam to Nitro TB Boss…..and Chief Cash was the 2nd damsire to Hollywood World Classic winner Banker Hap. …(Chief Cash is also the 3rd damsire to Wallace and Fleet Champ, about whom I have written a short story, which I posted somewhere on Greytalk, a while ago, under the title “Roman Noses and Roamin’ Noses”).

At any rate, the greater family of Fawn Rita is truly an American Classic, and to brag on it a bit more, as we had previously alluded to it in earlier posts, today we see the fine sire and great open stakes racer and winner, Flying Penske (Oshkosh Racey x She’s A Natural) and the superb Gable Vermillion, the Great Race Champion of a year ago, as the family’s torch-carriers.

The nice stakes competitor of the late 80s, Amarillo Cajun, is out of Gay Speedster, a half sister to Cajun Scholar, the 4th dam to Nitro TB Boss.

Damsire Oshkosh Racey is from the highly influential Promesse family, which is the taproot of many of the greyhounds who carry the “Oshkosh” prefix, and also Evening Memory and Rocksteady Eddie, brothers by HBs Commander x Morning Memory, who are very successful sires. Racey, as we have noted, is the sire of Flying Penske of the Fawn Rita family, so we see the same Promesse/Fawn Rita “nick” in the pedigree of Nitro TB Boss.

Sire Wigwam Hoss is from a small family of greyhounds, tracing to Flashy Betty (of unknown origin), and which had its heyday of sorts in the 70s, with the emergence of the sire Mar Ocolo (Mar Heat x Lulu Mohegan), who was the 2nd damsire to the great stakes racer and leading sire of his time, Sandy Printer (Yellow Printer x Sandy Sails).

Rifemeir, another member of this family, was the sire of American Derby winner June’s Tuffy, out of Cool June.

Wigwam Hoss carries Vainlla Fire (Highway Robber x Winter Dee) as his 2nd dam……Winter Dee is the dam of Straight Thru, the half brother to Vanilla Fire----and a multi-stakes winner and Rocky Mt. Sprint Champ, as well as a fine sire ----Straight Thru is the 3rd damsire to Nitro TB Boss.

Rockette Lante by JRs Vigilante x Pet Rockette

I don’t have any info on Oregon Liz, who is listed as the 4th dam to Rockette Lante----only that Oregon Liz is Irish----which is not notated on greyhound-data.com……nevertheless, I recognize this as the female family of Summa Sonic by the great, underrated stakes racer and sire, Summa Cum Laude, and out of Nancy Sue----who is the 3rd dam to Rockette Lante. Summa Sonic sired the good campaigner, Rudie Rose (x Designer Rose), who was also a sparingly bred, but useful sire.

Damsire Rocky T, however, is from a family that is very well known, as it yet another branch of the extraordinary Royal Princess family, and this branch comes down to us directly through 1953 American Derby winner, However (Oklahoman x Gay Glitter), who is the 4th dam to Rocky T-----who was a stakes campaigner and finished 2nd in the 1978 Hollywood World Classic, to Cousins Elite.

Others who descend directly from the However>Gay Glitter branch of Royal Princess include 100 race winner SomethingVelvet (Great Escape x Mat Velvet)….. Sunbow’s Best (Sunbow x LBs Dallas Girl) who was a stakes campaigner and the sire of some influence, found today in the pedigrees of Fortified Speed and his brother Fortified Power, as well as the pedigrees of Evening Memory, a contemporary sire of some repute, through Sunbow's Best "best" son, the powerful Big Ziggy (x Karla Jones)…..and by Madison Joe and his brother, Madison Joker (Venerated x Wonder Yet), well known and respected racers in Florida, and important sires in their own right----the latter being the damisre to Jamie’s Lane, a multiple stakes and Great Race winner of the early 80s, and a winner of the Rural Rube Award.

JRs Vigilante, the sire of Rockette Lante, is from an Australian family, which is the family of Ungwilla Lad, the sire of Black Aztec, an Aussie import of the 80s, who enjoyed a successful career here in the US. In Australia, it is the family of Zulu Moss, a dam of great reknown and the direct family of stakes racers and/or sires Casino Tom, Toss the Teddy and before them, the powerful Zimbabwe and Chief Dingaan. Today, in the US, this family is being expressed by the superb stakes racer and All American, Gable Oscar (Gable Dodge x Gable Raquel), who will, most likely begin, if he hasn’t already, what figures to be a promising career at stud.

Blazing Diablo by Blazing Desire x Blazing Brandy

Blazing Diablo is from the female family of Norma Piper, the matriarch of the track dogs from it. It is a family we have previously discussed and the family of some amazing greyhounds----foremost among them, the sire Electric Torch (Don’t Bother x Jeanerett), who is the last remaining link to the contemporary members of the Johnny Leonard sireline----Johnny Leonard being the sire of none other than Kinto Nebo.

The Johnny Leonard sireline suffered the same sort of compression as did the direct family of Kinto Nebo female descendents, as a result of the astonishing success of Kinto Nebo’s male offsprings, Westy Whizzer and his siblings and half siblings.

Galena and Bacnine, (as was Tuffolo before them) are the last hopes for the historic Johnny Leonard sireline, and we have every confidence that the former 2 will succeed, as has Tuffolo (Public Figure x Fuera).

Other members of this female family include American Derby winner Golden In, and Hy’s Black Flash, a Grady Sprint Champ, who had a career as a sire in Australia.

This classy pedigree is enhanced even further, by the infusion of All American and fine sire, Perceive, in the damsire slot to Blazing Diablo.

He brings in the family of Kit’s Image, the sibling to Hall of Fame dam, My Kit.

Lucky Carmel, the dam of Perceive, is the full sibling to Kunte Kinte (SS Jeno x Lucky Terra), who history is proving to be one of the great damsires in breeding. Not surprising, given the “Hall of Fame” roots of the family he is from.

Sire of Blazing Diablo, Blazing Desire, is still active, and in my humble opinion, is among the finest examples of racing greyhound conformation that I have seen recently.

He is from the distinguished Irish coursing family of Clounanna Sandills, also the family of Luskey Castle (Mortor Light x Up Dinky Up), an imported stakes competitor of the 70s, and the damsire to the outstanding sire, Solitary Runner (HBs Commander x Little Miss G).

Blazing Desire’s littermate, Pioneer Pride, was a Wonderland Derby winner, and the other littermates were outstanding racers in their own right.

Akins Ruby by Twilite Reward x Rare Jewel

The female family of Akins Ruby traces back all the way to 1830, and a female named Fly. It is an extremely large family of greyhounds, and has several branches---the main one in Australia....though it appears to have originated in the UK.

It first expressed itself in the US, via the sire Heavy Weapon (Wartnaby x Garbitas) who was the grandsire to Meadows (Husky Whisper II x Epergne) our first great sire of track racing greyhounds.

In 1950s America, it further expressed itself through the great Ample Time (Mixed Harmony x Vigorette), a sire of unusual influence, and before that, a racer of uncommon class.

Ample Time is the sire of the hugely influential Venerated (x Viewed)---Venerated’s many successful and influential offsprings include American Derby winner SS Jeno, and sire champion Caprioled ……. the brothers My Friend Lou and Sought After, the former of whom is the sire to Friend Westy, the sire of all the great Miss Gorgeous offsprings we have alluded to in these threads….and the former of whom is the damsire to Woodward, the damsire to Dutch Bahama----a 2-time American Derby winner, and an historically important sire in his own right.

Interestingly enough, it is Dutch Bahama who is the 2nd damsire to Akins Ruby,…and it is Caprioled who is the sire of Wild Nancy family members, LLs Zombie--- the 3rd dam to JK Tito, the damsire to Akins Ruby----and of LLs Zane, who is both the damsire to Willie Hondo, paternal grandsire to Akins Ruby….and the 3rd damsire to Twilite Reward, the sire of Akins Ruby.

Today, the female family of Akins Ruby is carried on through the Walton Beauty (UK) branch, which comes to us from Australia, via Milda, whose dam, Night Style, was an import.

American Derby runnerup, NRs Fast Eddie, now at stud, is also a member of this branch.

The other American branch of this family, from Elizabeth Pesek, gave us the powerful stakes racers and excellent sires, MCs Dutchmaster and MCs Grandmaster, brothers by Sandy Printer x Mulled.

Sire Twilite Reward brings in the great Michigan Vickey branch of the Court Ace family-----the family of American Derby winner PL Greer, and Hall of Fame stayer, Ps Rambling.

Akins Ruby has some real history makers in her background.

Thanks so much.... you should start a business providing this service. One of the pleasures of being a grey-owner is exploring the lore of our dogs.... the history intangibly adds to the experience of parenting one of these dogs.

heck, I can't even trace my own lineage back to 1830.

Two questions if you have the time: could you offer a brief explanation of compression as well as its effects? have you any recommended readings to further sate our appetites?

Any of Gary Guccione's books, which are purchasable through the NGA, are the definitve works on the subject....and if you want to really dig into the roots, look for a rare copy of Stonehenge Greyhounds----which occasionally show up in "rare book" sales or stores----and are very expensive....the last one I saw was going for $300+ ....

Lines are compressed due to the fact that some of them produce the dominant sires of an era.....so individuals from those familes, if they are not incestuously inbred, are deprived of having access to the sires from their own close relatives, who have demonstrated adaptation and prepotency which is more advanced or superiior to their peers, and so have to settle for something "less than the best"....so the female family does not always receive the benefit of its own prepotency, and other familes outpace their level of adaptation for several generations....sometimes to the eventual "breeding out" of an entire branch----or in the case of a small family----even an entire family. ...which is when no more females are left which have thrown useable daughters for breeding. It appears that the direct Lahoma Judy branch of the family of Lucky Bannon----whose dam is Valoretta----is on the verge of breeding out in tail female of females.....Lucky Bannon, an American Derby winner, was a dominant sire of his time. There is a sire, named Task Laser Beam, a well-performed racer, who has a chance to do something about it, but I am not sure of the prospects of females from the direct line----so it could breed out....

.....and that is one reason why it is important to understand the familial members and their inter-relationships----as a line can often be strenghtened by an infusion of another branch of the same taproot----as in the case of HBs Commander----whose sire and dam are each from the different branches of the Miss Judy family.

Island Daisy by Bee Lite x No Fruit

Unfortunately I have no information on the dam of Island Daisy. So we won't be able to tell what family Island Daisy descends from....but we can and will look at her sire, Bee Lite, who is very interestingly bred.

He comes from a long line of Miss Judy family greyhounds, through 5th dam Mary Moore, who was the dam of Boga, a winner of the Wonderland Derby, by President Day.

We can notice immediately the combination of the siblings Lucky Carmell and Kunta Kinte, by SS Jeno x Lucky Terra, in the 2nd remove of his dam, Betty Bee, who was a member of the super “litter of the century”, by Perceive x Buzz Off, which included All Amercians Blendway and Bartie.

His sire, Butter Lite, is descended from the same branch of the Miss Judy family as is his dam….each of them tracing to Lena Moore as their 5th and 6th dam, respectively. SS Jeno’s full sibling, SS Joni, is the dam of Bannon’s King, a Wonderland King and Queen’s Stakes Champion, and the damsire to Butter Lite……Lucky Bannon, the damsire to Kunta Kinte and Lucky Carmell, is also the sire of Bannon’s King….

Butter Pat, the sire of Butter Lite, brings in yet another branch of the Miss Judy family, through Beauty Reed, which is the branch of former Lincoln 3/8ths track record holder, the major stakes-placed Bubbling Beauty (Ks Flak x Jolly Reid) .

In addition to Bee Lite, who is still active, the Mary Moore branch of the Miss Judy family is well-entrenched in the blood of many of our contemporary high-echelon performers….thanks to the remrkable fremales Buzz Off and Benatar (Bee Lite's 2nd and 3rd dams), and is represented also, today, by the sire Betty N Ed (Bar Blur x Betty Bee), a half sibling to Bee Lite….and by 1993 Hollywood World Classic winner, By Tar (Big Tar x Bylass).

Doc’s Mom

Fran’s Doc Lille by Design Time x Tracys Buddy

We no sooner mention it, then it appears…..the greater female family here, is one that can be traced back to a pre-track racing female named More Expense, of unknown origin, but whose descendents include some of the more legendary greyhounds in the American paradigm…..among them, Ks Flak (Onie Jones x Montague Memory), a sprinter, stayer and sire of great power, and a Wonderland Derby winner……Lucky Bannon (Michigan Jack x Valoretta), an American Derby winner and a dominant sire in his era…..and Hoefer (Tell You Why x Nettler), the sire of Onie Jones and his siblings, Kelly and Ruth….all extremely important producers, and Ruth, a Wonderland Derby winner, no less.

While there are perhaps several branches to this family, the taproots are among the most prolific of our domestics….the family diverged into 2 distinct branches with the emergence of Pass Down (Upsidedown x Lady Squeers), which is the main branch of Ks Flak, Lucky Bannon and Hoefer…..and then we have the Irresistible branch (KC Byers x Ruby Ru), who is the direct female line to Frans Doc Lille.

Other descendents of Irresistible are the great damsire New World (Happy Yet x Irish Ruby), who counts among his daughter’s progeny, Lucky Terra, the dam of Kunte Kinte and Lucky Carmell.... Rising Queen, an American Derby winner.....and the superb Raynham Derby winner, Tuf Miler, also an All American Team captain, and a terrific sire in his own right----having sired the "scary fast" American Derby winner, Mr. Wizzard….

….another Irresistible family member is the fine racer and a leading sire of the 70s, Bulleree (Julius Caesar x Zipperee)….as well as Dot’s Doll (Westy Whizzer x Real Great), who was a Taunton Gold Collar winner.

Today this branch of a much larger family, appears to be represented by the sparingly bred WRs Z Rudy (Rudy Vallie x Cas Cricket).

Lifelong Buddy, the damsire to Frans Doc Lille, brings in the phenomenal Maythorn Pride branch of the Inler May family, through Maythorn’s greatest daughter, Miss Hilary. This is the family of Fortress and My Rooster, contemporary sires of influence----among many, many others.

Design Time is from the Wise Liz branch of the powerful Transpat family, which we have discussed at length in other articles, but which is beautifully represented in modern pedigrees by He’s My Man and Right Connection (Firelite x Beau Liz) a brother team of sires who have left their mark….and by aspiring sires, the American Derby winning Deuces Wild (Molotov x Pookys Rowdy), the classy Ole Harry (Wigwam Wag x Bitsy Liz) who is bred similarly to the sire sensation, Gable Dodge (Wigwam Wag x CJ Ima Bahama) also a member of the greater female family of Transpat.

Blitzen&Simone

Ardon Zinger by Kid Octane x Roundabout Nasa

The first thing that one notices about this pedigree is the aggressive inbreeding to Rooster Cogburn (Friend Westy x Miss Gorgeous) who is the sire of Roundabout Nasa and the maternal grandsire to Kid Octane.

Rooster Cogburn was a racer of extraordinary tenacity, desire and speed. He is among the greatest of greyhounds to ever emerge in the US, and unquestionably the best track dog from the legendary cross of Friend Westy, of the Kinto Nebo branch of the Dawn Tullera family, and Wayne Strong’s Miss Gorgeous, of the Royal Princess family, whose 3 matings together produced several tremendous racers and/or breeders the likes of whom are seldom seen…..and their offsprings include Highway Robber, Fruit Float, Miss Westy, Angola, Gambling Fever, Prairie Dog and Sand Man---- the latter having single-handedly revolutionized the Irish greyhound as a sire of influence theretofore unseen, except for the likes of Monalee Champion himself.

Rooster, though a perennial stakes competitior, All American and winner of the rich West Virginia Sheehan Sprint Classic, is better remembered for two of the races he lost, than for any of the many races races he won, nearly always against the best of his generation.

For it was Rooster’s great fortune or misfortune----depending on your perspective----to have emerged from the same crop as a son of Big Whizzer and the previously unheralded brood matron, Hookers Flower-----the invincible Downing---his arch rival.

Downing was born to be a star, and he was perhaps the brightest ever to light up the skies of the greyhound racing world. He burst upon the scene in the Hollywood World Classic of 1977, after having but TWO official races----a maiden and grade D affair-----and immediately---in an unprecented career move---- took on the very best the country had to offer, in the grueling 9 round elimination World Classic----the most coveted trophy that a sprinter might win in the US.

Downing , amazingly, ran away and hid from the best greyhounds in the country, despite his lack of experience, which cost him but one defeat at the hands of the superstars of his era, on his way to a resounding, historic victory in the World Classic final-----Downing never ran in a grade C or a grade B race in his life!

He did, however, run in 2 historic, riveting, gut-wrenching match races with Rooster Cogburn------and won them both……the second, narrowly…. and Rooster was, as no less of a judge than Don Cuddy, the trainer of Downing, admiringly mentioned…..”….a ragin’ bull of a dog…..he never knew he was beaten….”

Cuddy later handled Rooster during his win in the West Virginia Classic, and remarked to me after their well-earned victory….”I never saw a dog who had so many nagging, old injuries, who could run any harder or more gamely than Rooster Cogburn…..he was a revelation. He would run through a brick wall.”

Rooster enjoyed a fine career as a sire, and as luck would have it, at the time, he played “second fiddle” to Downing again. It is hard to say which of them exerts a more profound an influence upon greyhounds in the contemporary world, but they are both remembered fondly by this writer, and all who knew them or of them---as anyone with even a casual familiarity with pedigrees, certainly does. Ardon Zinger is a direct male line descendent of Downing.

But I digress.

Ardon Zinger is from an old Irish coursing line, which can be traced back to a female named Kalendar.

It was first brought to America, to my knowledge, by the late Wesley Lowrance of Kansas….whose imported Odessa Girl, by English Derby winner Own Pride x Silver Bell, was a nice stakes competitor during the early 70s at Taunton and St Petersburg.

She is the female line behind the contemporary sires Chet (Understood x Sterrett)----who assumed sire duties in Ireland after being caught on the last stride, in his bid for the American Derby trophy. Chet is the damsire to last year’s Irish Derby winner, the freakishly fast Bypass Byway.

If I may interject…..one of my pets was a son of the great Sterrett, a daughter of Odessa Girl, and the dam of Chet----who was a half to my friend Modac, aka “Mac”…..one of the most memorable and admirable individuals, man or dog, I have ever had the great good fortune to encounter.

Crystal Firelight (He’s My Man x Coastal Grape) carries the family colors today, as does Ardon Tailor (Tipp Lad x Ardon Cher), the sire of Raynham Sprint Champion, Carolina Byte.

Ardon Zinger and Ardon Tailor are family-related by their full sibling 2nd dams….Kayas Lance (a Hollywood World Classic runnerup) and Kayas Spear, by Oshkosh Caesar x Borrowing Power.

In Ireland, Whisper Wishes (Sand Man x Micklem Drive) was a damsire of some influence, and also from this female family of Kalendar, and is the sire of Westmead Move, the damline beneath Hollywood World Classic winner Flying Earnhardt (by Flying Penske).

Kid Octane is from the Alice Trader branch of the Handy Nebo>Dawn Tullera family, and contributes an infusion of the siblings Carry On and Target (Westy Whizzer x Bob’s Vickie), via his dam, Whitney Wins. Carry On was a Biscayne Derby champ, a leading sire in his day, and is from the Fawn Rita family. Target was a fine racer and sire in his own right.

Chata Beatrice by Pat C Best Yet x Conchata

I have spent the better part of the early morning and an hour or so tonight searching old periodicals, trying to find mention of Dancing Dina, the 6th dam to Chata Beatrice, to orient the female family-----as by the outstanding procession of damsires above the bottom line of this pedigree---somebody must have thought something of her----and of the family. Unfortuantely, my efforts proved fruitless.

There is little documentation of it on the database, so we will proceed assuming that it is an obscure branch of a greater female family.

If we start with Dancing Dina, we see the first documented infusion is of Andy Park, the sire of Julie S, the 5th dam to Chata Beatrice. Andy Park (Russ Park x Handy Judy) was a half sibling to 1952 American Derby winner, and Hall of Fame racer and sire, On The Line (Creekmore x Handy Judy).

Andy Park was from the female family of Chocolate Candy, a branch of the Royal Princess clan, and the family also of another Hall of Famer, named Lucky Pilot (Never Roll x Dixie By). Lucky Pilot was a legend in his own time, and a sire of extrordinary prepotency.

Today, the Chocolate Candy family is best expressed through the 2 time American Derby winner, Dutch Bahama----who, while not a member of this family, carries 2 doses of it, via his paternal grandsire Trap Rock (Tell You Why x Tumblers Twin) and his paternal first dam, Kahana (The Fakerogue x Snap Top), who are each Chocolate Candy family members.

Chocolate Candy is the direct female line ascendent of EAs Itzaboy (Oswald Cobblepot x San Tan Bomber), currently racing, and one of the finest active greyhounds in the country----a multiple stakes winner.

Julie S was mated to the great Fawn Rita family sire, Great Valor, by Mixed Harmony x Nobility-----whose damsire, Pageant, is by Lucky Pilot x Butterflies----one of the most important damsires from one of the most important matings in our racing history. Lucky Pilot reinforces the Chocolate Candy family of Andy Park----as he is also from it.

Indocin, the daughter of Great Valor and Julie S, was mated to Bill Moss, a son of the phenomenal Australian brood matron Elsie Moss (Magic Babe x Maggie Moss), whose sons Bill, Max, Thunderbolt, Mister, and Joe, who all shared the Moss surname, would have a profound effect on the American greyhounds of the 60s and 70s and beyond…..Max Moss is the damsire to no less a greyhound than the inimitable Ks Flak.

Indocin’s daughter, Hipcy, was put to Three Percent (so named, to publicize the 1975 kennel owner’s strike----the success of which was hinged upon the greyhound men getting “3%” of the “take”)…..Three Percent is from the female family of Kalendar, we have just discussed in the prior posting…..

Conchata, the dam of Chata Beatrice, is a daughter of the fine racer and sire, Nicky Finn----a son of Downing, from the female family of Culmore Silver---also the family of the ill-fated Count Rebel (Newdown Heather x Countess Venture), whom we have also previously discussed. Nicky Finn’s damsire is Summa Cum Laude, who was a fine racer and an under-appreciated sire….and who carries Great Valor as his damsire.

Pat C Best Yet is one of the most accomplished damsires in today’s overview, and descends from the Kathi Award family of American Derby winner, SS Jeno. Unruly Thomas (My Unruly Dan x Rattles) one of the nation's top sires, carries Pat C Best Yet as his damsire.

Metal Jet (Rocket Jet x Gorgeous Babe), the 3rd damsire to Pat C Best Yet, is a full sibling to Magic Babe---the sire of Elsie Moss. They are both full siblings to Tell You Why, who anchors the sireline of both Nicky Finn and Pat C Best Yet.

Toast The Prince, the maternal grandsire to Pat C Best Yet, is out of Burnt Toast----who is also the 3rd dam to Three Percent.

VERY nice stuff…..

Lake Erie Lady by FMCs Wake Up x Corelish Marcia

When Don Cuddy and I were breaking in and racing the offsprings of Maythorn Pride for the Pat Dalton kennel, during the heydays of racing at Wonderland in Revere----we had no inkling that we were handling some of the members of what would become a breeding dynasty. Shows what we knew.

Lake Erie Lady is a descendent of that great stakes racer and breeder, Maythorn Pride-----who was good enough on the track to have run Sandy Printer into submission in Biscayne stakes competition, which wasn’t supposed to happen.

We have already discussed the family of Inler May, from which Maythorn Pride is descended, but we can expand on her important contribution to the proliferation of this family’s many find descendents. Her descendents are numerous and highly influential on 3 continents.

Among them, in the USA, are the fine sire My Rooster (My Bocephus x Good Point) and his sibling My Mr Bocephus…..and of course, the great imported Fortress (Im Slippy x Exception), a perennial contemporary sire standings leader.

Fortress is the sire of the phenomenally fast Rural Rube award winning Its Aclevercatch (x Its Terbear), the brother tandem of Fortified Power and Fortified Speed (x Awesome Memory), the latter of whom has been exported to Australia as a sire, and up-and-coming young sires TNT Star Wars (x Greys Stardust) and Greys Flamebeau (x Greys Julianna)…..among many, many more, too numerous to detail here.

The recently retired-to-stud Dodgem By Design, conqueror of Talentedmrripley in stakes final competition, is a direct female family descendant of Maythorn Pride.

Damsire to Lake Erie Lady, Sail On II, is another of Dalton’s masterpieces, by the American Big Whizzer, and from the Irish family of Nelly Ply, which first had an impact on these shores via the contributions of the brothers, Sunbow and Air Patrol (Prairie Flash x Dainty Sister) who are important sires of the 70s and into the 80s….

…and if you look at the pedigree of the fine and underrated sire, Loxahatchee Dash (Costaud x Foxy Chic), you can see them working together as the superb damsires they were.

FMC’s Wake Up, the sire of Lake Erie Lady, is a member of the Fawn Rita family, through the Soxelyn branch, which is the direct branch of Johnny M (Johnny Leonard x Soxelyn) who is the 2nd damsire to Downing……who is the damsire to FMCs Wake Up.

Ode To Vixen by Flying Viper x KBs Trouble Be

This is an interesting family that we have not looked at yet, and it can be traced back to a female named Cosy, who must have appeared around the turn of the century, a century past.

There is a significant branch of it in Ireland, and it is the family of Tom’s The Best (Frightful Flash x Ladys Guest), a winner of both the English and Irish Derbies ( a phenomenal feat) and a top contemporary sire. His full sibling, Million Percent is currently at stud in the US.

In the USA, it is also the family of foundation sire, Wild Bill (Wild Gus x Lady Bug), who has an incredible 94 offspring listed on greyhound data----even though he was whelped in the early 1900s.

Jeno’s Leo Go, also from this family (SS Jeno x RLs Royal Missy) was a nice stakes competitor for Ross Lingle in the 70s, and perhaps an even better sire. His son, Oklahoma Randy (x Oklahoma Pam), was a Phoenix 3/8ths sensation in the 70s, and is the the paternal grandsire of the contemporary sire Mohican Yokel (Kiowa Andrew x Chicago Jill).

All American and Rural Rube Award winner Kiowa Sweet Trey and his littermate, American Derby winner Kiowa Sweet Joe (Oswald Cobblepot x TMs Sweet Dream), are the most recent members of this quality family, to have asserted its influence here in the USA. They are both now available to the racing greyhound breeder as sires.

Damsire KDs Monopoly carries River Dee (Monalee Flybolt x Irish Missy) as his 2nd dam, and she was a member of one of the greatest litters of the past quarter century, which included River Chief, a multiple stakes finalist and winner, River Lass and River Bolt. This is another branch of the Greysfeld family, which we have discussed before, and is the family of PL Greer and Ps Rambling.

Sire Flying Viper is out of the fine dam Win Jet, a half-sibling to Greys Statesman’s dam, Representation----a family that only a decade or so ago, was hanging on by a thread.
