HopeForHounds Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 (edited) Peanut just rolled over and I saw this on her belly. I know it wasn't there yesterday, because.................well she's naked and there is now way I would have missed this. Would a hemangioma come up this quickly? Or could it be a small hematoma, she was play fighting with Jake in the yard last night. It isn't a scab, because when I tried to gently wash it off it began to bleed. Okay, we're home and we were all wrong! The vet (not our regular) looked at it and said uh oh! Really not what I wanted to hear. Then she read the report on her hemangioma removal, came back and picked at it. Took the entire thing off with her nail and guess what was under that? A deep puncture hole! It bled like crazy, but then stopped. We have 10 days of antibiotics, but she'll be just fine. What the vet did tell me is that it was lucky I had noticed it so quickly, the red ring was the beginning of an infection. The location can be quite dangerous since it's a quick entry to her organs. I guess for once it's a good job I was worried it was something else. Phew! Guest greybookends Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I'm not sure what it is but it looks like something Monty gets from time to time and it goes away. If it's the same thing it's never been a problem. Quote

TheFullHouse Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Her little brother Sammie has one on his tummy too. It's never developed into anything and will bleed if I try to pick it off. HopeForHounds Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 You both have settled me down. She did have a hemangioma removed a few months ago and they did say she'd likely get more. I can get her seen tonight so we'll know then. It just came up so suddenly. TheFullHouse Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I meant to add that Sammie's started out with the redness around it but slowly the redness went away and we were left with the little spot and it's never changed. racindog Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 If it is the size of a small pimple then Ivy used to get them. Vet said it was nothing so I would just pop them and clean away the blood with alcohol and then it would scab over and heal pretty darn quick. They never came back but new ones occassionally came in different places. I think its jsut a greyhound thing. I wouldn't worry too much. Quote
greymomnc Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Mine have had similar looking things before. It could be a scab that is not ready to come off. I have done the same thing you did and gotten a little blood. I waited a few days for further healing and was able to wash it off. Also, theirs were rough to the touch vs. smooth and that's what your picture looks like too. Quote
HopeForHounds Posted January 14, 2010 Author Posted January 14, 2010 It's bigger than a pimple, it's as big as the top of my finger. Her hemangioma was smaller than this. Good. And Judy, Peanut thinks of Sammie has her Big Brother! I guess I shouldn't let Sammie read this, he may be offended I called him her "little brother". It's funny, he and Bullitt are so much smaller than Pistol and Joey, I automatically call them my little boys. Guest K9Cookies Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Meana had the same thing happen on her belly before. It seemed to "burst" after a while, then healed up without any trouble. Quote
greysmom Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 It looks like a kind of blood blister. Could Jake have nipped or bit her enough to form a bleeding bruise like that??? Guest Energy11 Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Goldie gets these all the time. In fact, she has one now. I remove and clean them, and that is it. They are like blood blisters. Never lasted, ... never developed into anything with her. Good Luck! Quote
Guest greybookends Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Sheana got a weird puncture playing out in the yard a couple of years ago. She developed those funky subcutaneous cracklies on her whole back end, it was really weird. It is the only time she ever bit me (my own fault). I hope Peanut has no such complications. Quote

Guest FastDogsOwnMe Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Weird! My Whippet has several little dermal hemangiosarcomas, and they have been there for YEARS. Several specialists all agree they are harmless and not worth taking off of a 13 year old dog, unless they change or grow rapidly (they never do). He is the vision of health and NO ONE, even vets, guesses his age right. Most think he's four or five, tops. What your girl had definitely doesn't look like them Glad you got it figured out! Quote

seeh2o Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Carl & Claire get these frequently, I've never taken them to the vet for it. I just clean them with peroxide then put some triple antibiotic ointment on them. Sometimes they get a red ring around them and sometimes they bleed, but once I see them and start treating them they eventually get smaller and fall off. Guest MZH Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 All our greyhounds who had white on them got spots like that. They never amounted to anything but they look scary. When they bled, they were very greasy. I still think they shouldn't be there though. Quote
