Can prednisone cause an increase in frequency of urination? Our boy is being treated for a colon infection as a result of a food allergy. He has also been on Flaygyl for 8 days. He started on the pred yesterday and has needed to urinate about every 4 hours since.

Yes, it can cause increased thirst which will cause them to drink more, which of course leads to more urination. Good luck to your boy.

Yes, my Lupo just finished a course of Prednisone and he was very thirsty and had to urinate a lot. It is a side effect of the medication. I set the alarm at night so that I could let him out frequently. A couple of times he could not hold his urine for three hours but the rest of the time he managed well.

Good Luck. As soon as you stop the medication he will return to normal.

Oh yeah. Beau has IBD and started 50mg of pred about a year ago. (he flucuates between 5 and 10mg now) but when he was on the higher doses, he would have to pee EVERY 3 hours round the clock and when he did pee he did for 3 minutes straight. It was terrible, poor guy.

It's gotten better on the lower dose.

Oh yes, Sara was on pred for 10 months and it was a high dose to start, every 2 hrs even through the night, poor baby. It will get better as they lower it.

Very normal! The longer they are on it the less frequent it will happen. Brandi is on it every other day for life 2mg. (since 2004). Every 6 months I have her kidneys and liver checked. So far they are normal but she also gets acupuncture every month and the holistic vet said this is one of the reasons we have not had any trouble with kidneys/liver.
