Miracles REALLY do happen. Three years ago, our LabMix Cecily was diagnosed with a mass on her spleen. Cessy was 13 at the time. Our Vet kept stressing to me that she was 13 and that with surgery on the spleen, there is a big risk of bleeding and after all she was 13. We went for an ultrasound at the Internal Medicine Specialist... his recommendation was surgery. We had to wait an extra day since it was the 4th of July... but on the 5th they removed a grapefruit/softball sized spleen, no cancer, hematoma only. Cessy came home the very next morning and lived to be 15.

I just got off the phone with Dr. Couto. Am I letting myself in for another big fall? Am I getting my hopes up too high again only to have them crash down on me?

He said that in greyhounds hemangiosarcoma is only 10% of the cases. Yes, it can be another cancer like spindlecell, or any number of other ones.

But, it could also be a hematoma. Her lab results are pointing to a non-cancerous growth.

She would still need a splenectomy but her lifespan would be just as long afterwards because it wasn't cancer.

If it is cancer, then my heart is still broken, but if not, I have a frigin MIRACLE!

I'm waiting to hear back from Red Bank to do the FNA. If it comes back negative or inconclusive, I'm heading back to OSU.

Please.....let this be a miracle!

Haven't been on very often,so I don't know the story but I truly hope it is indeed a miracle! It's about darn time someone had one!!!! :hope

Keeping you in our thoughts :grouphug I hope you will get some good news, and soon!

We are going through something similar right now. Ace's spleen is enlarged, according to our vet, after looking at an xray and doing an ultrasound. I emailed Dr. Couto with what is going on and her lab results that we got initially. Since that bloodwork she's been treated with doxy and she has perked up immensely. Anyway, Dr. C said that greyhounds have huge spleens anyway. Our doctor did not mention seeing any masses on the spleen, yet still wants to do exploratory surgery. I've just emailed Dr. C and told him I will not let them cut into her unless he says we should! Dr. C and his team are truly spectacular and I wish we lived closer...but we're about 8 hours away from him :(

I don't know if Mary Pat will have a chance to post an update, so I will do it for her.

She was unable to get the fine needle aspiration done at Red Bank quickly enough. Since Dr. Couto is going back out of town next week, she has decided to drive to Columbus on Tuesday (I'm up late so technically that is today). She will stay at my house and see Dr. Couto on Wednesday. They will probably do the aspiration then and make a decision about her treatment.

I have every faith in Dr Couto and his diagnostic skills. Dr Couto and his team have blessed us before, remember when Chrissy took Speck with what had been diagnosed as osteo. Turned out it wasn't. Hope you get that same kind of great news too.
