HopeForHounds
As an aside...how do you pronounce Dr. "Couto" ? That would be as if the "u" wasn't there. Between that and his first name Guillermo I used to hate introducing him. Guest longdoglady
My sweet lurcher Dusk developed bone cancer after an injury to her shoulder. She was a very fit 9 year old, walking 3 to 6 miles a day, jumping five bar gates with ease yet after a heavy fall on her shoulder the tumour developed and six months later we had to say good bye to her. The vet who diagnosed her was a greyhound and trailhound specialist and he told me it was common in both breeds after trauma to the bone. This was in 1996 and it still breaks my heart. LuvAPuppy
As promised, here is Dr Couto's response to me this morning Dr Couto says "Dogs (not just hounds) have a higher risk for developing OSA if they have had a surgical repair of a fracture and have hardware (nails, wires, pins, etc). Trauma does not seem to be a precipitating factor" Interesting. I certainly don't disbelieve him as he's putting a lot of practical research in to this. Echo never had any kind of surgery except for her routine spay and gastropexy. She never had orthopaedic surgery and yet.... but yes, Danes have the hereditary issue too. Her stud died young of bloat and the owner of the bitch was a bit daft so my breeder and I had blessedly little contact with her so I have no idea how the long term health of her dog was. But his finding is very, very interesting isn't it? Thank him for us please Quote Angie, Pewter, and Storm-puppy Forever missing Misty-Mousie (9/9/99 - 10/5/15)Fort Wayne, Indiana
