i have been using vectra ever since we got riley. i would like to change because it is getting pricey compared to other brands. are there any concerns changing from one brand to another?

Everyone uses what they think is best, I think they are all pricey

I live in the mountains of Pa, and use K9 advantex, I know some here feel this is not safe, but I have used it for years with no issues, on all breeds of dogs, I think the trick is to use it correctly! and none of them are safe in my opinion! but Lymes is a great factor here, So Lymes verses tick meds,....... I'll take the topical meds!

K9 Advantage for fleas.

Preventic collar (inexpensive and available without prescription through 1800petmeds.com) for the ticks. Preventic collar is amazing for ticks if they are an issue where you live.

(K9 Advantix did not work for us).

I use Revolution. A bit expensive, but well worth it as it is heartworm, flea, tick, ringworm, and tapeworm preventative all at once. I believe it is 160 for 6 months, but with two hounds, gets expensive.

Rita, I was reading about the Preventic collar. The instructions say it has to be high up on the neck, but would it work just as well to have it just above the shoulders and just below a tag collar? Does it have any odor?

I have Preventic collars on both my greys right now. We normally don't have tick problems, but I did find two on Olive a couple of weeks ago. I think the reason they say to put it high on the neck is to make sure there is contact between the collar and the dog.

I've been happy with the collars. Both times I used them they got rid of the ticks. I haven't noticed any odor.

I use Frontline Plus. It does ticks and fleas and is supposed to be water resistant. However it will wash off (according the the rep) if you use any shampoo with soap in it.

The preventic collar has no odor.

As far as where to put it on their neck, look up soulsmom's siggy pic in the member's section of GT and you will notice that da soul man is wearing a preventic collar in that pic! That is just how and where Toby and Robin wear their preventic collars. They work great. Reason I'm pointing you to da soul man's picture is that soul's mom is the one that recommended preventics to me a couple of years ago. We had a horrible tick problem a year and a half or so ago in North FL and this was the only thing that worked (and our vet ok'd them).

For the record, any of the topical flea/tick prevention will be washed off with soap based shampoos. :colgate
