Intermittent Limping

Recommended Posts

Joe, our 10 year old, started limping when he got up today. After he ate his breakfast, he was okay for a little bit, then started again. We checked him out - it seems to be his foot that bothers him because we moved his leg/ankle/etc. all around and he was fine, but when we reached his foot he got protective of it. Neither of us saw anything embedded, no sign of anything on his pads...nothing. He ate lunch, and moved great right after. Now, 20 minutes later, he's limping again. Any thoughts?

Our 5-1/2 year old Suze who never raced, has had a mystery limp (right rear) for 3 years. She has been checked out numerous times and x-rayed 3 times and nothing.........no corns, no cuts, no bruising, nothing. She was totally rested for a year and it didn't help. She wears TheraPaws when on walks but still limps in the house. The latest guess about the source of her pain is "soft pads". Hope your dx is a little more specific, but just as benign.

You might have to pop a muzzle on him so you can take a good close look at that foot. Your description makes me think of a cracked toenail or foreign body up between the toes. Worth checking, anyways.

Muzzled him and checked it good - didn't see anything.

Last hour or so he started panting and pacing, head realllly low - not limping but favoring it a bit. Looks like it's a bit swollen just below his hock "elbow". He finally laid down for good - he had been coming into the kitchen and standing *right* behind me...and not moving. Makes it hard to cook dinner! :blush DH carried him into the living room and put him on one of the dog beds and canoodled with him so I could finish cooking.

Thought about giving him something for pain, but I don't know what and whatever we give I don't want it to mask anything for the vet tomorrow morning. If we call right away, they can usually get us in right away - they leave their 8-9a for call-ins.

You can give him something tonight if he is uncomfortable. No need to make him wait it out. I just wouldn;t give him anything in the morning. If they will do x-rays that won't make a difference if you give him something.

You can give 75mg of deramaxx and / or 50 mg of tramadol.

Don't have any painkillers on hand here.

He didn't move much at all last night. Hasn't moved yet this morning, and he's usually up and around at 5a or so. The others went out, and he didn't get up or anything. Still swollen a bit.

He goes in at 8:50.

Just a thought here but before I could see any signs of a corn, Trip started limping. I felt and looked carefully but could not see or feel any changes. I put a therapaw on and he walked just fine. Took the therapaw off and he limped. A week later, the circle shape appeared on one of his pads and I can now see the distinctive corn. Trip has never had a corn before but one of our bridge hound had corns.

Vet thinks it's a tendon injury of some sort. She also thought it could be a tendon infection, but didn't see anywhere it would try to drain to (no signs on the exterior of a sore or anything). She put him on antibiotics, just in case, and some pain meds. Checked a tick panel and it was fine, and his bloodwork looked good too. Temp was a bit elevated, but she said not much. She's sending the xrays to an ortho vet for a second opinion just to make sure, but she and the other vet working said it looks like tendon/soft tissue injury - that maybe he slipped on the ice or something.

Thanks for your advice, prayers, and well wishes. Will post updates.
