Sterling Update

I thought I would post an update on Sterling for the kind people who have given me so much advice and good thoughts over the past several months.

Well, my update is good news--Sterling has Lyme disease! Ha! Who would have thought I'd be so happy to find that out? I am just thrilled to know what is wrong with him.

I can't remember if I've posted since the first week in December so I'll start there. At that point, his back end wasn't working properly and he wasn't eating. We took him off the amoxicillin and put him on metronidazole and batryl (sp?) while waiting for blood test results. The thought was that he was having some sort of reaction to the amoxicillin itself. Within 36 hours, he was doing better (eating and could walk across wood floor fairly well.) Within a few days, his walking was perfectly fine. He has been putting weight back on (he had gone from 72 to 68 and then down to 61, weighed in at 66 after 2.5 weeks, and I think he's gained another couple of pounds since then.) I've just been adding either canned food or dinner leftovers to his meals to keep him eating and gaining weight and that is working really well.

So we did a full tick panel and he came up as having Lyme. My aunt said that it just barely registered but between his symptoms and the test results, we are treating it as Lyme. So he is now on a month of doxycycline, which will hopefully knock it out. He hasn't had any side effects from the doxy so I'm happy about that.

Thanks to everybody who has helped me through this!

I'm so happy that you have a diagnosis and that treatment is underway!!! :yay Hugs to Sterling. I hope his treatment is successful and he's feeling great soon.

I might also suggest that you join the Tick-L list. They have tons of experience and are very helpful, too. Many vets are on the list, also, that specialize in TBDs, and many owners of dogs that have had TBD's, too. You can also search the archives which are filled with information.

One more thing, I hope a full tick panel was done. So many times a dog often has more than one TBD simultaneously.

Very best wishes,

Shelly in OK
