Scooby172
My 12 year old galgo , Valor is really starting to show his age. Poor guy is having trouble with his back end, trouble getting up, legs give out sometimes, you know the old age rear end syndrome. I've noticed he's had trouble holding his urine overnight, this is new and I was looking for suggestions to keep him comfortable and decrease the wetting. I will bring hm to the vet to rule out any medical issues but I suspect this is the normal decline associated with hind end weakness. Any suggestions on keeping beds from complete ruin due to urine would also be appreciated (they all got new L.L. Bean beds for Christmas, of course they got them as soon as they arrived). Thank you. winnie
Proin has done wonders for our two "leaky" girls Bonny and Darcy. As for the bed - look into a waterproof liner. Guest Spencers_Greyt
I used a belly band with a Poise incontinence pad in it. That helped a lot and kept Spencer dry especially at night. He's currently on Proin too but that helps only sporadically. ETA - I used a plastic mattress cover on Spencer's bed and then put a sheet over it that can be easily washed. Guest Energy11
You could get some "chux", at least that is what we called them in the hospital. They are plastic pads, with a soft cotton top covering. You could put them on his bedding. I also had a friend who used Pampers on her incontinent Grey. RE: Proin, I'd be careful! We had a thread on her recently, where someone lost their GH due to Proin. Yes, also DO get him checked out by the vet, bloodwork, etc., to rule out a possile UTI, Kidney problems, or Diabetes. Give him a Huge hug, and good luck! Edited December 20, 2009 by Energy11
Batmom
Definitely check for UTI. Might also be worth switching his food to one that is lower in salt. The manufacturers usually don't list that on the package but if you email or call their customer support line, they can get the sodium percentage for you. Hugs and best luck. brandimom
We use shrink wrap the kind that the dentist office uses on their equipment. If there is an accident at our home only the cover gets wet and can be washed and the urine never soaks through. Brandi is on pred every other day and has fecal incontinence so we know what you are going through.
seeh2o
I have some amazing reusable bedpads for my girl who has accidents from time to time. Maybe buy a few rewashable bedpads that you can put on top of his bed. JRs Medical Supplies has hands down the best price $8.20 for a brand new, very high quality 34" x 52" pad. And shipping is lightening fast, I received 4 pads the next day. And yes, I've been called the Queen of PeePee Pads, a dubious distinction, but a distinction none the less.
