Guest RegalGreys
My 3.5 year old girl seems to have another infection. The first one - a few months ago - was cleared up quickly with antibiotics, but came back in 3 weeks. The vet gave her another round of the same antibiotic and she responded well. As suggested by a grey friend, I put her on cranberry supplements to help prevent another infection. Now (a month later) Jewel is peeing the carpet, drinking excessively, and exhibiting the same signs as before with squatting multiple times to pee on trips outside. Is there anything else I should be doing to help prevent them? Should I be concerned that it's not just a simple infection and there might be something else wrong? I asked the Vet abotu culturing a urine sample, but it's so expensive that I was hoping to find another alternative.
Trihounds
I've heard a tablespoon per meal of apple cider vinegar can be helpful, though I have no first hand experience with it. Excessive drinking and subsequent urination is a symptom for many more serious issues like kidney problems and diabetes. I do have first hand experience (in pets) for both of those issues, unfortunately. I am sure that would have been found during diagnosis for the first UTI, though. I would personally still have her checked out again to rule everything else out and to get vet counsel about the prevention of UTIs. There may be supplements to her diet you could give that would help also. This way, at least you would know what you are dealing with. Good luck. Guest SueG201
how high is the protein in her food? also does she squat real low to the ground when peeing, if so wipe her lady parts my first grey used to get UTI ALL THE TIME, and I lowered the protein and wiped her girly parts after she was done peeing
Guest Tenderhearts
The tap water where I live was a contributing factor to recurring UTI's in my female greyhound many years ago, and also my little wire-haired terrier (she actually ended up with bladder stones). My vet recommended using distilled water instead. That seemed to help tremendously.
Guest Energy11
I use a Brita on tap filter on all my grey's water, as ours is well water, and VERY high in minerals. You might try that, but, if she continues getting UTIs, I would opt for the culture, and full blood work, but be sure it isn't something more serious. Cari squats very close to the ground, and, yes, wiping her "girl parts," is a good idea. Good Luck!
