Excessive Drinking/peeing

Rita has been drinking a LOT over the past two days ago, and also peeing a LOT as a result. She is 5 years old and seems to be in great health--she is eating fine, pooping fine, loves her walks etc. She has been acting a bit strangely over the past week or so--"isolating" herself from the other dogs in a back bedroom at times, which she has never done (my other greyhound Taylor tends to do this, but not Rita). Other than that behavior, though, and the drinking/peeing, she has seemed perfectly normal. At first I attributed the isolating behavior to adjusting to the new addition to our home (a 9 month old Iggie puppy who we have had for almost 2 months now), but I don't really think that is it because she really mostly ignores him and he plays mostly with my DH or me or with Lucy the Lab, he doesn't really bother Rita.

Is this something that would warrant a vet visit? Could it be a UTI? Would a dog know to drink more water if they have a UTI? I know that diabetes can cause excessive drinking too, so I may just need to get some blood work to rule that out, but wondered what else it could be.

By the way her diet has not changed at all. I feed all the dogs raw, which tends to reduce how much they need to drink, so this increased drinking is pretty unusual. Her appetite has been totally normal.

If you've already ruled out diet, could be a lot of things from stress, UTI, Diabetes,Cushings, and a few other things.

Maybe get a urine sample first catch in the am and take it in and ask that they grow a culture as well. I would start there.

Keep us posted

Could be a UTI, Diabetes, Cushings, Kidney Disease... all of the above. I'd get a full blood panel done and a urinanalysis, and go from there. Good Luck, and wishing you the best!

Could be many things. After many tests, Tigger was finally diagnosed with a drinking phobia, but it could have easily been other problems. Definitely, talk with your vet sooner rather than later. Let us know what happens.
