Guest greytloves
Thanks everyone. I'll be purchasing some liquid Vitamin E. He already gets Grizzly Salmon Oil, wonder if its OK to also add a Vitamin E pill? Vet yesterday took a look at it. Scraped it with his thumb (which meant Polo tried to bite him! this foster boy of mine! ) said that he did not think antibotics would do a thing. (DANG IT!) came back with some Omega pills. I told him about the Grizzly, he left put that away. Came back and suggessted a special diet of no grain, I told him he was on EVO. He thought for a minute and said "I don't want to say this since he is a foster and I hate labeling fosters with something, but I think its auto immune." DOUBLE DANG IT!!!! On the bright side, he is free from hooks and tapes. But still has gas and bouts of runny poo. He said could be related. Gave him some meds to take for that. Gave him a steriod shot and a prescription of steriods. Said if this helps, it probably is Lupus, if not we will have to biopsy and send off to A&M for diagnosis. Guest SusanP
Even though it is auto immune, some hounds with D.L. respond to tetracycline and niacinimide. I don't know why that antibiotic helps, though. I could get only .5 % hydrocortisone cream for Zippy at the drug store. They said 1% is prescription strength. So I asked the vet, and she said I could either try the .5% or use my own prescription Triamcinolone (1%) cream, which is what I am now trying. I am also using the vitamin E. But if that fails, the vet shouldn't discount using the tetracycline simply because it is auto immune, IMO. For my Simon, it worked just fine without our having to resort to steroids. For Zippy, now, we're just beginning this journey. Her nose looks just like your guy's, from what I can tell. She's had the crusty little "wing" for the 5 years we've had her (got her at age 7). Only now I'm seeing wings on both sides and lots of cracking and discoloration in the nostril edge. Guest greytloves
When we say niacinmide are we saying a vitamin b? If so, why do we not supplement with a vitamin b? I just wish I could put something on his nose that would moisturize it and stay there! Unfortunately, no amount of reasoning with him makes him not lick his nose! Greylover97
Carolina has the same nose issue. Steroids are hit or miss with autoimmune. They were a miss for Carolina. She gets 500mg of niacinimide. You can get niacinimide at any health food store. Guest SusanP
Niacin and Niacinimide are not the same thing, BTW. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotinamide Edited November 7, 2009 by SusanP
dbullwinkel
Flex also takes salmon oil..no problem with the vitamin E. I also forgot..when his nose is bad he gets a prescription cream; protopic. The vet had given me a liquid version (very expensive) Through GT, I found out about the human version prescription in a cream. the tube wasn't cheap, but it lasts forever. Guest SusanP
Wow--a day or two with the 1% hydrocortisone cream and vitamin E, and Zippy's nose is healing fantastically. Plain Vaseline never did that for her. But I wonder if that means it is discoid lupus, or if hydrocortisone and vitamin E are just good for healing in general? Guest greytloves
Day 3 of the steroids and his nose is at least 50% better. I have also been using a paste of un-petroleum jelly and Vitamin E on his nose and I think that has helped. I bought the niacinmide but am just nervous about that. Want to check with my vet first. But it is getting better!

Guest SusanP
Great news! The topical hydrocortisone and vitamin E has healed Zippy's nose, too. Are the steroids you are using oral or topical?
Guest greytloves
Here are a few pictures of the nose around day 5 of the steriods. It is hard to tell, but it is nice and smooth now without flakes. Still looks as if it is healing but the roughness is a lot less.
