Cougar Update

We've had several small ups and downs over the last several weeks with Cougar. I'll try to hit the highlights and keep it brief (not my strong suite).

We thought chemo 5 was the final, but Ohio State sent 6 and oncologist said he would give his own dog the 6th if he was handling it as well as Cougs has. So at his last appointment (two weeks ago), he got his final dose and a clean bill of health for the time being. We go back next week for a looksie and possibly some oral doses of something to maintain his metastis-free state.

We hit accupuncture visit number 4 (I think) and he returns on Wednesday. It has been almost 2 weeks instead of 1 this time so hopefully we can stretch that to 3-4 weeks if he continues to maintain or improve with his shaky back legs.

Had to do an out of town trip right after the unexpected final chemo and a neighbor was wonderful enough to stay with him since my regular sitter was already booked. He was a little off as usual after chemo and didn't want to eat much. He also seemed to have trouble getting around but DH came back from his trip one night early and by the time I got home he was back on the upswing. Full out bouncing and making a lap through the house when uncrated and cockroaching in our bed.

His appetite has been ferocious the last couple of days. I would like him to be a little more hydrated as his skin isn't popping back like it should when I pinch it out. Praying for a 5+ hour stretch of sleep tonight before he wants to go out again. Poor fella got tangled up when I was getting his food this morning and went spread eagle on the kitchen floor. I had to lift him up but he went right for his food when I finally let go of him. I imagine with the amount of pain meds he gets, he probably didn't feel too bad afterwards. He seems to be getting around fine.

We are considering with regular vet to do the depo-medral shot for his stenosis. His research shows the support is varied, but the worst side effect was that it may simply be ineffectual. I think there is also a small concern of poking around close to the spine.

Well, I knew I couldn't keep it brief, but wanted to let all that have been following know that our ups and downs have been relatively small, thank goodness. And most importantly, Cougar is still hanging in there!

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life, gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are." -- Unknown
