CaliforniaGreys
Right, sorry that was a typo, she gave him Vetalog. It is a steriod. Sorry Liz, I should have been able to pick up on that. If I'm not mistaken, it has the same active ingredient that the genesis spray has. Guest Greyt_dog_lover
Thanks all. I really appreciate the hand holding you have provided, especially Claudia. I have been giving Roger 4000 mg of fish oil twice a day and 100 mgs. of benadryl three times a day. The fish oil was in capsules. I wondered if they were too thick for Roger to digest so I cut them and squeezed the oil out and mixed it with peanut butter. I then put the empy capsule in warm water to see if it would disolve rapidly. The capsule did not disolve. After 30 miunutes, I wondered if any of the previous capsules had done anything but simply pass through. Oh well, Ya Gotta Love a Puppy but they sure can make one worry. For those who do not know, Roger is an Oops Puppy. I have been worrying about him since he was 7 1/2 weeks old. Sounds like things are looking better. Just one comment, a dogs stomach, or a human's for that matter contains hydrochloric acid, not water, there is no chance a pill casing could pass through the GI tract intact. Guest Rogersmom
I was just thinking that I was once told to give Roger liquid Pepto Mismal as the pills took longer to dissolve and would just pass right through him. That is why I was concerned that the fish oil capsule would pass through him and not do him any good.

Just one comment, a dogs stomach, or a human's for that matter contains hydrochloric acid, not water, there is no chance a pill casing could pass through the GI tract intact. Particularly if it's enteric-coated fish oil, which is seen in some locations. It's specifically designed to resist the acid environment of the stomach, but the capsule dissolves once it passes the duodenum, entering an alkaline environment. Old-style enteric coatings were stuff like shellac; newer ones contain weird phthalates that I'm not so sure are healthy. tbhounds
The effects of the injection will wear off in about a week--you really should get him on an antihistamine--ring your vet and ask which one they would recommend--Chlortrimeton works for my dogs---much better than benadryl for skin itchies IMO. Guest Rogersmom
What dosage do you give your dogs? At this point I think my vet would give me what ever you all recommend. I told her about the suport of the message board and told her that it was like having 85 grandparents giving advice. She laughed. My vet is a University of Pennsylvania graduate. She is very loving and very intelligent.
Guest Rogersmom
We just came back from the vets from a re-check and rabbie's shot visit. She was so impressed with the Genesis spray results that she is ordering it for her practise. Roger had a fungal test and skin scrapping and both were negative. My vet is suggesting allergy testing. She is going to see how much it will cost. Roger seems far more comfortable now. I also got him a nice fleece coat made by www.houndtime.com. He slept through the night for the fist time in several months wearing his new coat. I am so thankful for the advice that everyone gave me especially Cbudshome. Guest COBRAorMAVERICK
After going around and around with our vet over Mavericks feet, we both decided it was time for a specialist and allergy testing. Two of his big spikes for positive reaction were cats (Our three were here before he was) and dust (professional house cleaners every two weeks, again, before he came here) He now gets an allergy shot every two weeks at home. It has greatly improved his feet. There is still some licking, but nowhere near what he used to do. It is very expensive, but it does get right to the source problem and they can make a "cocktail" of meds to control the specific allergens. Hope this helps. Guest Rogersmom
Well, I am allergic to cats so we do not have one. If Roger is allergic to dust...well...there is only one thing I hate worse than a dirty house and that is cleaning it. I believe I will eventually get around to the allergy testing but right now, being unemployed, this is one expense that I will have to postpone for awhile. Rustyroo
I've been wondering how his feet have been now that we are into November and the weather is changing. I'm glad the Genesis spray worked. It always did for Rusty. Guest Rogersmom
I still believe he needs the spray. If I skip it, I see him start licking again. I guess we are not out of his allergy season yet.

Guest Rogersmom
Today is a bad day for Roger. He is really bleeding from three paws. I washed his feet when he came in, dried them, sprayed them with Genesis spray and put socks on him. I can see blood spots on the socks. He does not seem interested in eating but then Roger is not a food hog. (Cookie hog, yes, food hog, no). He is lying on my bed sleeping. I am wondering if our outing to the flea market,or the trip to the vet's (rabbies shot, lyme's disease sht and cookies which are not the allergy kind) may have caused this set back. I had slowed up on the Genesis spray and the benedryl as Roger did not seem to need it. Oh well, off to call my vet.
Guest Rogersmom
I took Roger to the vet's to get a shot of Vetalog because he seemed to have a relapse with licking his feet and making them bleed inspite of the limited diet, benadryl, and spraying his feet with Genesis spray. Turns out he could not get the shot as he had just had his rabies and lyme's disease shots. Seems there needs to be a two week period between these shots. We are going to go back on Monday so he can get his parvo or what ever shot and then get the Vetalog shot on December 1. So...we got another Genesis spray and it was decided that he could take Hydroxyzine Pamoate, 50 mg. three times a day. Roger's has been chewing at his butt and it left a bad smell on my bed. She checked his anal glands and got blood. (I heard what I imagine is the greyhound scram of death). He is now taking Metronidazole three times a day. I do not know the strength. Poor Roger, between his allergies and anal gland being blocked. I wanted a puppy as I thought I would not have large medical bills. The tech at my vet's office told me that I should bite the bullet and do the allergy testing claiming Vetalog shots could cause diabetes. Well, right now this is not an option. She claims it costs$350.00. I know I am spending more than that with what I am doing but I can not come up with $350.00 at one time. I am going to ask the vet on Monday if she will let me pay her out on the testing.. I know you all know about vet bills. I am thankful that what Roger needs is not anything really serious. It would be nice to know what he was allergic to so that I could avoid it and he would be spared an allergic reaction.
Batmom
Are you able to wash feet off each time he comes in from outside? If you haven't yet, I would also recommend doing the food trial. If you haven't yet, I would also recommend doing the food trial. I have totally changed Roger's diet. Batmom
If you don't see any improvement in 2-3 weeks, or if he gets worse in that time, would be worth switching to something else. Only reason I keep bringing that up is my dog who turned out to be allergic to fish and fish oil, discovered by accident after we'd spent beaucoup bucks on Genesis spray, tests, more tests, etc. Not remotely suggesting your pup has the same allergy, just that it can really surprise you what a dog might be allergic to. Fingers crossed something falls into place soon -- I can imagine how frustrated you must feel. CaliforniaGreys
I'm sorry Liz, I know you're banging your head against the wall. He was doing so well. I wonder what happened to cause the setback. My experience with food allergies is limited to Wayne and the kennel had it under control so I just made sure I followed their suggestions. Guest Rogersmom
When I switched Roger's diet, I started him out on venison and sweet potato, limited ingredient, grain free, allergy formula but he did not like it. I then tried the sweet potato and fish. He started to get dry patches on his body so I added fish oil to his food. If he is allergic to fish, that would really be sad. I would not know what else to try as poultry was what he was eating and that could be his problem. I'm sorry Liz, I know you're banging your head against the wall. He was doing so well. I wonder what happened to cause the setback. My experience with food allergies is limited to Wayne and the kennel had it under control so I just made sure I followed their suggestions. You are my best hand holder. Thank you so much. I know my vet loves Roger. She has always been good to us. I just hope this problem gets solved soon and that the solution is simple. Now with the infected anal glands added into the mix it seems like the plot is thickening.
