Guest FullMetalFrank
Poor Riley. I would try not to panic, bruising is likely after a traumatic injury. Ice would be my choice; frozen veggie bags make good ice packs that will conform to his leg.
LuvAPuppy
Shannon is right. Heat promotes blood flow to tissues like muscles and ligaments/tendons that have poor blood flow. Blood promotes healing, however increased blood flow causes swelling and pain. Ice is used to reduce swelling and slow bleeding. That's why you immediately ice a cut, especially in a highly vascularized area like the head--to stop bleeding. As far after his injury if he's having swelling, I think I'd ice as well just for his comfort. Try and hold it on for about 20 minutes, then take it off for the rest of the hour. krissn333
Lucy, everyone that's posted has given good advice, I just wanted to add my support, though, I wouldn't ice for 20 min at a time. My vet has always told me 2-5 minutes but do it often...like 5 minutes on 30 minutes off. Leaving cold on their thin skin for too long doesn't help, so I've heard. With a fall like he had, I would fully expect some wicked looking bruising. I know that there's a product that's been mentioned for bruising after surgeries - I have no idea what it is though but Heather (Greysandmoregreys) would know what it's called. I'm not sure if it would help Mr. Riley, but, it's worth asking about. Glad to hear he's at least mentally feeling a little more like himself today Quote Kristin in Moline, IL USA with Ozzie (MRL Crusin Clem), Clarice (Clarice McBones), Latte and Sage the IGs, and the kitties: Violet and Rose Lovingly Remembered: Sutra (Fliowa Sutra) 12/02/97-10/12/10, Pinky (Pick Me) 04/20/03-11/19/12, Fritz (Fritz Fire) 02/05/01 - 05/20/13, Ace (Fantastic Ace) 02/05/01 - 07/05/13, and Carrie (Takin the Crumbs) 05/08/99 - 09/04/13. Rickiesmom
After Rickie's surgeries, when there has been a lot of bruising and some swelling, we alternated warm and cold compresses. Warm for about 10-15 minutes, then maybe an hour or so later, cold for about the same (10 min). Compress wrapped in a tea towel folded over and over around it to make it more comfortable. Did this 3 - 4 times a day, and it really, really helped. (ETA a bit more detail.) Edited September 27, 2009 by Rickiesmom

RileysLegacy
Thank you everyone!! I iced it last night. I have no idea if it helped, but hopefully it did. He is out of Valium, and is noticeable more fidgety. I let him sleep outside for about 2.5 hrs last night because he is so much more comfortable out there. I also tried letting him sleep in the living room on his bed, out of the crate. He would not lie down. I think he has actually gotten used to the crate, b/c when I bring him inside he heads right for it. He just looked at me like I had 3 heads when I offered him breakfast, but hopefully he will eat a little later. Puzzle & Jabari have volunteered to help if needed This morning was his last dose of Rimadyl, and tonight is his last Tramadol. It will be interesting to see how he acts w/o any medication. I'll let you know if anything changes... thanks again ps I will ask about Arnica gel tomorrow, and I am also trying to get a hold of an acupuncturist. Guest Energy11
I am puzzled at why he seems so much more comfortable outside???? Hope he does okay wihtout the pain meds. I'd ask the vet for more of everything, including the Valium, until you get to the bottom of this. Good luck and lots of love!

Guest ctgreylover
The first time Tony hurt his neck, nothing worked well until he was put on prednisone. Maybe that would be better? if he is not improving, I would ask the vet. be forewarned - get a belly band asap. prednisone make them drink more and pee more and when they gotta go, they gotta go. I hope things get better soon.
RileysLegacy
Sort of a funny story... I just let Riley into the yard, and he lay down on his bed. So I brought out a bag of frozen beans to ice his leg with. I went inside for a couple minutes but heard some weird noises coming from the yard. Puzzle had stolen the bag of beans and was desperately trying to rip it open. He LOVES vegetables. Guess I'll have to use real ice
Guest MomoftheFuzzy
Just checking in on Riley. And Puzzle with his veggies?? Too funny. RileysLegacy
Just got back from the vet. She is concerned about the swelling and bruising. She wrapped his entire leg to try and reduce the swelling and give his wrist some support. I am going to massage it and alternate hot and cold for 20 mins, 4 times a day. She also called an orthopedist and is going to run this all by him to see if he has any opinions. I am taking him back on Wednesday for a re-check. He is done with all of his meds, and will start Previcox tomorrow. Right now he is having a total freak out because the huge red bandage on his leg, and the stress of going to the vet, but hopefully he'll calm down soon. I honestly have not noticed any difference since stopping the other meds. Please think good thoughts that the swelling goes down and my poor boy can walk again soon.
