Lost My Junie To Osteo

I have lurked on this forum since we adopted our Junie 6 years ago from Hill Country Greyhound Association in Texas (racing name was Nebo De Niro). I never posted, but gleaned so much information anytime Junie just looked at me cross-eyed or was injured. we lost Junie to osteosarcoma on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, five days shy of his 12th birthday, after his being diagnosed on August 11, 2009. We are missing him terribly, and he is loved so much.

We are comforted that Junie is a participant in the OS study at MIT through bloodwork and tissue samples. If his contributions can save one greyhound or other big dog, i know he would be showing off to know that.

We are forever grateful to Dr. Carol Machery at Grassmere Animal Hospital in Nashville, TN who cared for Junie since we moved here a few years ago, and to Dr. Steven Rapp at Boerne Medical in Boerne, TX who cared for Junie when we were in San Antonio. TX. If you live in either of these two places, I wholeheartedly recommend both of these vets. They both loved our Junie and gave him amazing care.

Junie was a crazy and silly boy that liked to show off and who was addicted to Greenies, CET Chewies and the Three Dog Bakery carob and peanut butter cookies and vanilla cookies. Up until the begining of August, Junie was still running 8-10 laps around the backyard each night - he was incredibly muscular until the end, and it was hard to believe he was nearing 12. (This was not something we showed him how to do. From day 1 that he arrived at our home, he ran. We cheered him on every single time as he did this funny jackrabbit running with a silly grin and tongue hanging out.) He always had to be first -- first up or down the stairs, first in the door from the backyard, first in the house after a car ride, first for dinner before my husband and I, first to the bathroom after waking up in the mornings (albeit, his bathroom was outside), etc. You get the picture! He was incredibly spoiled, but that was our mission from the beginning. He had raced for several years, went through a few families and then we adopted him at 6 years old.

So, I also thank all of you. You didn't know it, but you helped me through these years. I learned so much from your posts, your questions, your experiences and your answers.

It's good that you came out of "lurker" mode---we can share your sadness, and let you know how sorry we are that you lost your precious boy.

He ran with joy, safe in his loving family until the very end.
