Guest Kaquel
Warning: nasty poop descriptions to follow Saturday afternoon Lite had diarrhea-mushy, semi-pick-up-able. We had just driven the hour drive down to the adoption kennel, plus he had been hanging out in the car for almost an hour beforehand (we had a few stops to make before leaving town). I figured he was just stressed out, and didn't worry. Sunday I don't remember anything particularly nasty in the poop department, but I don't think he had super solid stools. Monday he had mushy poop in the morning and afternoon. That evening I went out to dinner and came home to liquified poop in his crate-which tells me he was definately feeling very sick. I still wasn't terribly worried-I thought maybe he ate something that didn't agree with him or maybe he had worms again, and resolved to take in a stool sample when we take our new grey in for a wellness exam. Well Tuesday morning I woke up to THE most disgusting sight I have ever seen. Lite had had diarrhea in at least 3 different places and had stepped in it-tracking it all over the floor, his bed, basically everywhere. We fed him as normal and when I got home from school I found he had gone in his crate again. That night and the next morning we only gave him about a handful of food. Overnight he vomited a little orangy liquid. Every time he's gone out to poop since then has been small in amount, basically liquified and contained mucous. Wednesday we called the vet and they told us to put him on chicken and rice for 24 hours, and to bring in a stool sample if he was not improving by the next day. Last night he vomited more orangy liquid and some time during the day he did so again. What has me the most worried by far is that although he pooped this morning, he is not showing any urge to do so this afternoon. I've taken him out twice, walking him quite a bit to get the wheels turning, but to no avail. At this point I'm thinking it could be a blockage, which would be very unfortunate. I know this is a big rambling mess, so I'll summarize his symptoms (er, and other important info): -he is having liquidy, mucousy diarrhea, but I have seen no blood so far (and I've been on the lookout) -he is vomiting orangy liquid 6-7 hours after eating, but it is definately less in amount than what he is ingesting -he is eating fine and has a very healthy appetite -he is drinking normally -he shows no interest in pooping, but he pooped normally this morning -he is not panting excessively -he appears to be resting comfortably -he is not bloated as far as I can tell -at 2 pm he seemed lethargic, but he perked up some after I fed him a little chicken and rice We can't get him or a stool sample to the vet until 6, and in the interim I am worried sick. Edited to add that we're supposed to be picking up our new greyhound on Saturday, but if he is still sick I'm not sure how responsible that would be. Sigh. MaryJane
If he has had diarrhea since last week and now vomiting for a few days -- that's a sick puppy to me. I would bring him to an e-vet.
Guest momofevie
I agree with MaryJane; he (not just a stool sample) needs to see a vet ASAP. In the meantime, no food.
Guest Energy11
Yes, VET ASAP. This dog is most likely dehydrated. The Vets will get him on fluids, and do a stool sample, probably a stool CULTURE, and maybe put him on some Centrine for the vomiting and Flagyl for the diarrhea. BOTH are administerable in shot or IV form. GOOD LUCK WITH THIS, but yes, I'd vet him, ASAP! Dee
Houndtime
I am sorry that he is not feeling well. I might fast him for 24 hours, use Imodium and start him with a bland diet; boiled chicken, extra cooked rice so that it is like smush. pumpkin, cottage cheese with well cooked pasta also sweet potatoes with skin are good. If you are not comfortable, a vet visit is a good idea. He might have gotten stressed being back at the kennel and once his stomach is upset it takes some time for it to calm down. Guest Kaquel
We took him to the vet to be safe. He was basically in perfect health except his rectum was inflamed-understandable. He was not dehydrated, he was not bloated in any way, his physical exam was perfect and he was at a perfect weight. PHEW. The vet said it is common for dogs to not have a bowel movement for a day or so after a long (as in a few days) bout of diarrhea. Another PHEW. She said the vomiting was most likely due to having an empty stomach for the day or so he did-so it looks like fasting may not work for Lite in the future-good to know. She gave us two medicines to give him for a few days-one to calm his stomach and one to bring down the inflammation in his bowels (one is essentially pepcid and I forget the name of the other). She said that if he throws up again to call, but she thinks we'll be okay. For now he is on a diet of prescription canned food and chicken and rice until we get some normal looking poops going, but then it should be smooth sailing. We didn't thoroughly discuss the cause of his tummy issues, but she thinks it's a good idea to bring in a stool sample to be sure there are no worms. It could very well be stress like Irene said:he had a very long day at the kennel (and I think the extra long car ride was probably super stressful too), then the very next day we had a long M&G with lots of new dogs. Whatever the cause, hopefully he'll be doing better soon. Edited May 22, 2009 by Kaquel

Guest Hollys2hounds
Kathryn, Gunner gets himself all worked up from time to time, and we have similar issues, though never any vomiting. This past April, my son and I went to Florida, and left the dogs home( in their own environment) with DH, and Gunner had bad diarrhea for the first few days I was gone, and he moped around like he didn't feel well. Sounds like the stress of the kennel, and then the stress of the M&G might have just been too much for your boy. Glad he is feeling better. Hugs to your big handsome boy!
