Guest Parsniptoast
Reggie is nibbling and licking some bits of his body including his thigh quite a bit - not breaking the skin but is clearly irritated by something and is tugging his fur. It tends to be in one or two patches and I am wondering if he has very dry skin. He does have dander and is on the fish oil thing along with sardines etc. He's also regularly groomed and is still moulting... but can he be moisturised and if so what would be best? I've had a look at the skin and it doesn't appear to be inflamed or anything and he's been treated for fleas. I know that since I've had him I've developed contact dermatitis but perhaps he's allergic to me!! Oh that doesn't bear thinking of... I'm trying to get pictures up but am a bit confused as to how I go about that.. I'm working on it - it's not like I don't have hundreds Thanks in advance for any thoughts! Guest greygirls2
How long have you had Reggie? It could be dry skin or maybe even a food allergy. My boy gets what I call the "itchies" in the late summer and we still haven't figured out exactly what it is that bothers him so I use a shampoo by Vibrac called Epi-Soothe You can get it at the vet or find it online. There is also a remoisturizing spray to go with it. They leave a coating on the fur to repel allergens but it makes them so shiny and soft....not oily at all and it does seem to make him feel much better. Just watch closely to be sure he doesn't make hot spots on his skin with all the nibbling. Hope this helps.
Guest Energy11
Could be seasonal type allergies (pollen) and maybe food, too. Might want to try giving him Benedryl, (2) 25 mg tablets, and see if that helps. If it does, you can talk to your vet about keeping him on them, or something else for allergies. Good Luck! cleptogrey
COULD BE ALLERGIES, WHO KNOWS..... I FOUND THAT A PAPER TOWEL MOISTENED W/ WATER AND CLEANING THEIR COAT IS AN EASY TEMPORARY SOLUTION W/O HAVING TO BATH THE DOG. I JUST WIPE THE DOG DOWN, IT TAKES A COUPLE OF TOWELS, REMEMBER THE BELLY AND INNER THIGHS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT MY SENSITIVE MALE REACTS SEASONALLY AND I DO THAT AS WELL AS PUT HIM ON A HYPOALLERGENIC FOOD, I USE THE EAGLE PACK. IT'S A REAL HIT OR MISS SITUATION. DURING THE COOLER MONTHS I FEED MY DOG A DIFFERENT FOOD, BY THE SAME COMPANY SO I CAN RETREAT TO THE HYPO-ALLERGENIC BLEND IN THE SPRING/SUMMER. FISH OIL IS ALSO GOOD TO ADD AND BREWER'S YEAST, JUST GIVE THEM A HANDFUL DAILY. GOOD LUCK

Guest PhillyPups
You may want to have his thyroid level checked too. This happened to a friend's greyhound and since the thyroid meds, not a problem.
Guest Parsniptoast
Thanks for the replies. I'm wondering about allergies too as I've noticed that Reg has bloodshot eyes and runny nose occasionally as well as the odd sneeze. Poor fella, I drag him through fields for a walk so he's probably feeling really rotten. I'll investigate the benedryl and see how it goes. Thanks again, Reggie moved in just 20 days ago though it feels like he's been with me forever. I adore him. Sorry, I shoved that reply through too quick, I meant to say thanks for the advice about the shampoo too. I was looking for something to soothe in this case. Also, the emu oil looks good but from what I've seen it would do my skin some good too... Reg and I could share toiletetries!
TheFullHouse
I had that problem with Gee, two or three spots and she was scratching all the time. Turned out it was a low thyroid! I had no idea low thyroid could cause such severe itching. edited to add: You can try and give him 50mg. of Benedryl and see if that helps. If it does, it's most likely allergies. Guest Parsniptoast
I just wanted to say a quick thank you. I gave Reggie benedryl as per JillysfullHouse and Energy11 and he's been like a different dog this evening. For the first time almost since getting him he was happy (not eager, just happy!) to go for a walk and off lead run this evening and although his eyes are still blood shot, his nose runny and he's whining a lot he is a lot perkier. Thanks so much for your help. Jane and Reg
tbhounds
You might want to try Chlortrimeton instead of Benedryl--really works better for skin itchies. My 75lb GH took 2 4mg tablets twice a day. It's a safe to start and stop ab lib.
