How Long Do Split Pads Take To Heal?

Ivy cracked a pad at agility today <_< It didn't bleed; it just sort of split open at the top. I'm out to buy some Bag Balm tomorrow, and she's on bed rest indefinitely.

So now I'm wondering how long do split pads take to heal? And how to avoid re-injury?? Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Dazzle's didn't take but a day or so to get calloused enough to walk comfortably on. I guess it took a little over a week to fully heal.

ETA: Pad, right? not web? 'Cause a split web is a whole different ballgame!

If it's a crack and not a cut it can heal up pretty quickly. Bag Balm and a baby sock at night for a couple nights, and keep her foot dry. Reapply BB if she gets her foot wet going outside.

If it was the agility training that "caused" the crack you might want to try one of the pad toughening products that people have mentioned. The quick turns and acceleration on a harder surface isn't what her feet are used to. Also, the BB will probably help on all four feet to keep them in shape - supple and able to handle the stresses of training.

Yep, pad. I looked at it again and it's bleeding a little. It just looks "puss-y", so I cleaned it and put some Bacitracin on it. She's limping, but she really cannot keep still despite the pain :P

It's not a cut. It looks like it just burst open. I don't think agility itself caused the crack as her pads have always been very dry and cracking. I guess it was extra bad today and it just burst. Will do the bag balm and look up some of the other products to toughen them up. In the meantime, I'll keep her on bed rest for a couple days and skip our next class.

i deal w/ this all the time, if it's not one paw it's another. i just found a teeny tiny crack in emily's which was causing her to limp. I swear by Epsom's Salts or Grey Sea Salt, soak it at least 2xs daily to keep it clean and draw out andy dirt and it works wonders. I finally bought a therapaw since i figured i would just rotate paws, enough of Emily going on workmen's comp.

Mean while, Giselle, Felix finally started to enjoy the tunnel -thanks for the advice-and then.....he lacerated his hock and on top of that ripped his stop pad! He is out of agility for a while, the hock injury has really slowed him down big time.

Hmmm...the pad is peeling off. It's really hurting Ivy now. For the first time, I was actually a little scared she would nip out of pain while I was wrangling to grab her paw. Should I just let it die and wither off or bring her to the vets to get it clipped off?

The 'raw' part looks like it's callousing over, though. Very light bleeding. I think it hurts her more than anything else. Her pads are suuuuuuuuuper dry :( Bag Balm to the rescue!

By you saying it 'burst' and has some pus...it sounds like it could be an abscess. Maybe she had a sliver or something in the pad and it just worked its way out? If that is the case I would soak her foot in Epsom Salts a few times a day. I would also scrub it up really good with Betadine in case there is an infection. And then I would apply some Polysporin/Neosporin and put gauze over it...vet wrap and then a baby sock. If it is just a cracked pad then I would still soak it in Epsom salts and would apply the Polysporin/Neosporin with a baby sock. I find the bag balm to be a super oily and I didn't like using it too much (I tried a couple of years ago on Koda's cracked pad). It is best to goop it on and then cover it up so that it doesn't get everywhere. Hope she heals quickly! :goodluck
