I've never heard of freezing a melanoma...I would certainly feel much better cutting it out and getting clean margins. I mean, if you have clean margins, you're all set...no worries! Do you think it's worth getting a second opinion?

I have no experiece at all with this. I just read an article that says melanomas on the mouth are usually malignant. The vet I saw today is not my regular vet, but he's the one in the office who pulled Misty through her crisis. I know the vet I'm seeing on the 6th and I would imagine he will be the second opinion. I have the article on the melanoma vaccine and will bring it with me. I should mention that the vet today gave me 3 options, one of which was cutting it out but the healing process because of its location could pose problems so he thinks this should be tried first.

Reading the replies and after reading the article on the Melanoma vaccine which states that usually melanomas on the mouth are malignant, I've decided I'm calling my regular vet on Monday am and talking to him about cutting it out. I just need to be prepared for the problems there will be during the healing process because of where it's located.

Oh - I am so sorry for Wayne and you. Suzy has had 3 very similar growths - they came out of nowhere, looked like a blood blister and then went dark. One was on her lip, one on left front leg, one on right back. We have had all 3 removed under a local and luckily all three came back as benign. Good luck!

Sending my many prayers for our precious Wayne. Remember too...some things "look" really sinister and come back ok. I mean the pathology report states it all...so therefore...I am going to chant that is KNOT melanoma...and then if it is...I KNOW it will KNOT come back! Hug Wayne for me. :grouphug Angel LaceyLaine had a horrible and huge abdominal melanoma that required 2 surgeries one of which was very radical...it went clear through the abdominal wall and muscle...it was rough...but she did very well after her long recovery and it never came back. :grouphug

I think I'm going to opt against the liquid nitrogen because I don't think anything can be sent to the lab if they freeze it off, but I'm not sure. I will go with whatever my vet suggests to me tomorrow. This scares me more than Misty's Cushings, don't know why but it does. Ignorance is a very scary thing!!

I wouldn't go with the freezing, either, for the simple fact that it seems they'd be more likely to get the whole thing & leave clean margins with surgery. This is just my own personal observation, but it just looks too smooth & well defined to be a malignant melanoma (as they generally present in humans - kind of ugly & misshapen). :goodluck:goodluck:goodluck that it's benign!!!

Thank you!! I know most of you are not vets, but I really appreciate the opinions here and for me, they are very helpful. So I thank you for voicing yours.

Oh, no , Claudia. I am just reading this. It WILL be nothing. As always, your sweet ones have strong positive vibes coming their way. After reading through this I am wondering if a laser surgery may be an option. I think there may be less bleeding that way and quicker healing. I had a Doberman with something similar. We had them removed several times.

I would worry about the freezing as well if it destroys the specimen...I would want that definitive diagnosis for the the best possible treatment plan. Whatever it is...at least it is brand new...you would certainly notice if if had been there when you brush his teeth. Hug Wayne for me....still chanting...this is NOTHING~with Lacers they really did KNOT think hers was Melanoma...and it was a horrible one...so...I am thinking if they think it is...it isn't??? Just sayin...it's KNOT~

I emailed Jean Dodds this am and asked about Wayne. She recommends having it surgically removed to insure clean margins. She also said there's a chance it's not a melanoma. So tomorrow morning I will schedule the procedure. Please keep Wayne in your thoughts and thank you!
