Guest charlie Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 My lovely second grey was put to sleep in mid October this year - he just missed the snow, that came 10 days after he died, and OF COURSE I blamed myself (if I'd done something different?) he could have seen it again - he loved the snow, in my garden, he'd jump and play like a puppy, and he was never quite a happy trusting dog, always unsure, always jumpy, and the scars on his head told their own tale. I flood my heart with love for him when the grief bites, because I was majorly messed up when I lost my first grey, I lost work (permanently, I'm self-employed) and was ill, depressed, and it was all bad. This time, I'm flooding the heartbreak with love, and wherever he is, it can't do any harm. When I was first bereaved, it felt like letting go of the sadness meant I was flushing my lovely boy away, not honouring him - I've come to realise, none of them liked it if I was sad, and honouring them with an influx of love is the best memorial, and that it neither cuts them out, nor means I am not honouring their memory. We make love so conditional - as humans, we can't help it - but with our greys, we can't make it conditional upon being here - they can "retire" and not have much of a lifetime left, and offering our love on an ongoing basis (while hopefully taking another grey into our lives, out of the shelters, the euthenasia, the ditches) has to be the most profound, spirtual/humanistic way ahead. Guest charlie Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 (edited) Where he is, the snow's not even cold - that lovely boy, and his predecessor, opened my weary old heart - and thanks for the replies, I've made my peace with this, and whether a dog is with us, or passed on, you can't go far wrong with love. (Oh, okay then, and the odd bit of cheese! ) Charlie PS just saw your reply Greymuse - computer's offline but I may post pics of my new boy soon! Edited November 24, 2008 by charlie Quote
carronstar Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Charlie, I am so sorry that you lost your grey. It is, in my experience, something that just opens the earth underneath you. However, you have clearly learned their wonderful lesson for/to us. The greatest way we can honor them is to love them each and every day that we have with them, and to rescue another one and keep that love going. Quote

Amen to that! The greatest dishonour I could have done him, was to say, I have no more love to give, it's a finite resource, you took it all, and turned it to dust... I've honoured him by saying "more please" - and got this furry dynamo, 84lbs of wanting to kill ALL the other doggies LOL! Clickers, here we come.... Charlie Quote

HG, looking at your sig, you took a hard double-hit there - and within a ridiculously short period of time. You're human, give yourself a break, love the babyhounds you lost without question, and don't let them not being there stop or poison your love. The dog/s that are meant for you, are waiting, when you're ready! I am so sorry for your loss - look after yourself, and know that you did a good thing, the best you could and then some - they bring out the best in us, don't they? Charlie Quote
Guest Pipi5 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 That was your sign from him.... I lost BuyCut in February...he did not like the cold or the snow. In March, we got 6 inches of snow & I took it as his sign to me that he was okay, warm & snuggly while I got the snow I had wanted. Quote

Hawthorn Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Your post reminded me of the words of a Carly Simon song which went something like this: Life is eternal; and love is immortal; and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight. Quote When a relationship of love is disrupted, the relationship does not cease. The love continues; therefore, the relationship continues. The work of grief is to reconcile and redeem life to a different love relationship. ~ W Scott Lineberry Always Greyhounds Home Boarding and Greyhounds With Love House Sitting
Guest argolola Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I'm so sorry for your loss. It hurts so badly, but I do believe our angels send us someone else that needs love and a wonderful home. They know when we are ready to open our hearts again. God bless you. Quote
racindog Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I've been there. Slim taught me FROM THE OTHER SIDE that he was still with me, still a part of my life, and we could MOVE FORWARD TOGETHER just like before and that this is what HE wanted. My deepest sympathies. As Hellen Keller said, we can never lose what we have so loved as it deeply becomes a part of us. And I know for me that it is a blessing. Quote
HeyGrey Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Best Wishes Charlie! I cry often for my beloved hearthound,Danny and it's good because he's always with me and I love and miss him so much. You say it so well, to honor our greyhound hearthounds, continue loving. Mick, my second greyhound, has helped so much. Danny showed me that loving senior greyhounds who have lost their homes is part of his mission and now mine. Thanks for this thread.
