RaineysMom Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Rainey went out last night and came back in limping, and her outside toe on her front right foot was sticking out almost 90 degrees I picked up her paw, and simply just popped it right back in (didn't have to pull or anything, just lightly pushed and it went back in). well, she did it again just a bit ago -- same results, I just pushed it back. Now I'm worried that it will happen when we're not here and she'll be in a lot of pain we did a search and looks like just wrapping it should hopefully help -- but I'm not sure what's the best way? anyone have any experience/suggestions? (pictures would be helpful too, if anyone has one? ) thanks in advance! Batmom Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 I just wrapped Zema's as if I were bandaging an owie -- wrapped the whole foot, leaving middle two toetips visible, and up the ankle to just before the dewclaw. Since there wasn't any owie and this was just for support, I used 2-3 rounds of vetwrap only, no gauze or anything. I usually start at the front of the ankle, just above the foot, and do the foot in kind of a figure 8 pattern from there. Dunno if that helps? Hope Rainey's toe will stay put! Guest LolasMom Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 My girl did the same thing (90 degrees). I wrapped it with vet wrap anytime she would be running (even small zoomies in the yard) for six weeks! In addition, I added a Tendon & Ligament herb to her food during that time. BTW, wet grass seems to be the most dangerous surface as the toes can grip down into the wet mud and twist if they turn quickly. Her toe took about two months to heal completely. She dislocated another toe (45 degrees) another time. I was much less attentive and allowed her to run too soon without wrap an it happened two more times. The more times it dislocates the less likely it is to heal completely. Unfortunately, that ended in surgery. Experience taught me its worth the time and effort to let it heal completely! Batmom described the way to wrap perfectly. If I can, tonight I'll wrap Freddy's foot and take a picture to post. Give Rainey a hug from me. Quote
Guest sheila Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 I would also suggest just a wee bit of padding/cusion between the toes to help stabilize the toe and prevent any rub. Just a corn pad or a bit of moleskin might be enough. Quote
calif_chaz Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Maggie dislocated her outside toe on hind foot. She was really bad about tolerating splint or soft wrap and we ended up using a therapaw and leash walking at the times she normally runs like a maniac. Worked out fine. Quote

RaineysMom Posted November 23, 2008 Author Posted November 23, 2008 thanks for the help!!!! :) we wrapped it like Jey suggested (VERY loosely, just enough to keep the toe in place) and so far, so good! since it's happened more than once now, I'll keep it wrapped so hopefully the tendons and stuff can get unstretched ? She's good about it and isn't fussing with it. someone needs to inform Rainey it's NOT October anymore Quote Kim and Bruce - with Rick (Rick Roufus 6/30/16) and missing my sweet greyhound Angels Rainey (LG's Rainey 10/4/2000 - 3/8/2011), Anubis (RJ's Saint Nick 12/25/2001 - 9/12/12) and Zeke (Hey Who Whiz It 4/6/2009 - 7/20/2020) and Larry (PTL Laroach 2/24/2007 - 8/2/2020) -- and Chester (Lab) (8/31/1990 - 5/3/2005), Captain (Schipperke) (10/12/1992 - 6/13/2005) and Remy (GSP) (?/?/1998 - 1/6/2005) at the bridge"Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk.
