Sorcha
My 15 year old English setter is just not herself and it seems to have come on all of a sudden. She did not ask for dinner, which never happens (she is always excited for dinner), and when I put her food down she was not interested. I approached her and she started shaking (like shivering) and ran away down the stairs to the basement as if to hide. I went over to her downstairs and checked her over, only thing I could tell that was off are her gums are very pale. I got her to come back upstairs and she was here for a moment and then dashed back downstairs to the basement (finished room) where she remains. I called my regular vet and was lucky to reach him because he closes at 4 pm on Fridays and just happened to be on his way out, he is not available but said it sounds concerning and suggested I take her to the emergency vet and have an x-ray done to see if something ruptured. ??? What to do?
Batmom
If her gums are very pale, I'd take her to the e-vet now. Best luck. Sorcha
Well I am baffled. I got her back upstairs, cuddled her, and checked her over again, now her gums are back to pink. Maybe she was just scared by something or? I don't know, I will keep monitoring her.
CaliforniaGreys
Scary for you I'm sure. Watch her closely and good luck. If her gums are pink, take your thumb and press down on the gum. Does the color come right back? Guest EmilyAnne
Is she on any meds? Not to suggest your English Setter is epileptic, but Henry shivers before a Grand-Mal, so I do know shivering can be a sign something is wrong physically. Sorcha
Well she ate a few bits of her dinner and seems settled now. < shrug > Is she on any meds? It goes to white when I press and then back to pale pink. Not the usual pink, but rather lighter.

Guest LindsaySF
Um kinda? It goes to white when I press and then back to pale pink. Not the usual pink, but rather lighter. Does it eventually return to the proper pink shade? Pale gums is a very worrying sign. If the color is back now it might not be an emergency, but I would get her to your regular vet for a check up. Guest Lovey_Hounds
Dogs do get a form of dementia ( old dog syndrome). she may have also had a small stroke/siesure earlier that you may not have been able to notice... when they come out of that state they are really confused even towards the people who are their families. go to your vet and get a good check up done ASAP to make sure there is nothing being missed. Best of luck and hopefully its nothing.
