Guest Greensleeves
Ok, I asked about this earlier but got my product names mixed up. Sorry! Is there a difference in effectiveness between Frontline and K9Advantix? Any reason to use one or the other? We've been using Frontline when we have the occasional tick sighting, but I just got a coupon for Advantix in the mail. Any reason I shouldn't give it a try? Thanks! ShantisMom
Shanti had a bad reaction to the K9Advantix. She started screaming and spinning in circles and biting at herself about 3 hours after application. I bathed her and it settled down. I won't use it on her ever again. I can use it on my dog of steel, Nala. Quote The Girls
Hubcitypam
Advantix has permethrin in it and I try to avoid that. It is the ingredient that people usually refer to when they say not to use "regular" flea products on greys. However, I'm sure many greys are just fine with it. GeorgeofNE
If you have cats in your household, you should not use Advantix (according to my vet, who flat out refused to prescribe it). I used some that someone had given me on George; he did fine, but I do have cats, so got rid of the rest. The advantage to it is that is supposedly repels ticks as well as mosquitoes. The others KILL ticks (eventually), but do not repel them. Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. Guest crazy4greys
My vet does not recommend K9Advantix for greyhounds. He has seen too many bad reactions. Either use Frontline Plus or Advantage with a Preventic Collar if you have ticks.
Robin1017
There was a post here a while ago (summer?) and the general idea was that the K9Advantix has something that makes it harmful to cats, and that in this instance greys are closer to cats than dogs and often have the same bad reactions. The rule of thumb I took from the whole post (sorry I can't locate it) is that if it is considered harmful to cats, don't give it to a grey. I think that is right. Or else I totally misunderstood. turbotaina
Not a fan of anything containing permethrin on greyhounds, though there is no clinical evidence to back it up. One of our adopters used Advantix earlier this year with disasterous results - her dog started seizing and eventually had to be put down since they could not get the seizures under control. Not all adverse effects are so extreme - usually you'll just see irritation at the application site and maybe some digestive upset, but I'm not willing to risk it.
