Guest EmilyAnne
Henry did something very shocking this morning, he turned his nose up at his food. I checked his mouth thoroughly, and I his teeth and gums look good as far as I can see. He started Phenobarbital Oct. 5th, and is at 300 mg/day. He is on homecooked. You can see recipe in sidebar of my blog. Oct. 23rd we started him on a supplement~ Fennel capsules, to help with the crazy over eager appetite. He was so hungry he was trying to eat the furniture. I did get him to eat 3/4 of his food through hand feeding. Took a lot longer. He'd eat a few bites, walk away, come back and eat another bite. Henry has ALWAYS had a good appetite. (except when he had severe diarrhea) I had cleared the Fennel supplement with the vet and she said it was OK. I'm gonna stop with the Fennel supplement for now. Do you think I should just do that and see what happens? I doubt he is having liver problems as he has only been on Phenobarbital for three weeks now. I am open to suggestions on tweaking his recipe. He is allergic to chicken and eggs. I play it safe and avoid all poultry.
Guest Pipi5
Gabby didn't eat last night either, but she didn't want anyone eating her food so she laid on the kitchen floor & guarded it. She does this once in a while & I just put her food in the frig & then warm it up the next night. She ate her treats...she's on phenobarbital also, 400 mg. TheFullHouse
I think I'd stop the Fennel and see if his appetite returns. I'd much rather they be hungry than refuse to eat. Guest EmilyAnne
Judy~ I agree! Too much appetite is a whole lot better than not enough! I'm going ot stop the Fennel completely for awhile, and if the extreme hunger comes back, then I'll try half the dose. It could be that he just no longer needs the Fennel as I know over time the side effects of Pheno do lessen, so perhaps the hunger side effect lessened on it's own with the Pheno working more efficiently, and the Fennel is over doing the control of appetite as it's not needed anymore? Each dog is different, so I know for some dogs the overly eager appetite from Pheno fades, and in others it stays to some extent. Hilda~ It's a relief to know it doesn't always mean something is wrong. I was worried it was pretty much impossible for a dog on Pheno to lose his/her appetite unless something was wrong. Thanks everyone!
