Tore His Pads......

We took Goodie to the dog park on Sunday and it was the first time since we got him (May of this year) that he totally took off at racing speed! He's been loving the cooler weather and running around the back yard but I knew he just wanted to go! He ran maybe once or twice (only really fast the one time) and then just wanted to "hang" with the other pooches.

Well we got home and he came in and laid down but a few hours later when he got up he was limping, thinking he had pulled a muscle or was just sore I rubbed his legs for him. It wasn't until later when he was licking his paws I saw what had happened....three of his four paws he tore the pads off! They were on the larger pads only. Poor baby! I put some Neosporin cream on and wrapped him all up and he actually kept two of the three bandages on overnight. It's been three days now and he's feeling much better and they've actually healed up pretty quick. Now my dilema - when I take him to the park again do I have to get some booties for him or will the pads toughen up a little bit?

Just let it be. If he blows a pad, he blows a pad. It's going to happen. Yes, they toughen up to a degree, but blown pads still happen. No Neosporin necessary... that stuff is like crack to dogs... it just encourages them to mess with it. They'll heal just fine on their own.

My little girl was 1 month off the track. When I let her and my big guy play in the backyard she had bloody pads on all 4 paws. We didnt let her run with Bart for 1 week, then just let her run by herself for a few days, and now they are back to playing. Then on our vacation last week, while meeting a friend in Dayton Ohio, Bart tore some skin holding one of his pads to his paw (looks painful), so he will not be allowed to run for a week or so while it heals. What a PITA!
