General,my greyhound, is once again starting to chew at his hind quarter area taking out clumps of hair untill it bleeds. I have had him seen by two vets. they seem to do the same thing, inject with steroid, bath with malasob, some type of meds by mouth. we are up north, may through sept. and than in florida the rest of the time. I was going to try an change his food, up north there was no problem. looking for some help for my general.

Welcome to GreyTalk -- sorry it's a problem that brings you here, but we're glad you found us!

Just throwing some thoughts out here...It's very curious that this only occurs October - May and only in Florida. Did the vets diagnose this as some sort of allergic dermatitis? My golden had something similar going on, and while the prednisone/antibiotics/bath gave her some relief, the symptoms always came back eventually. After a food change, she has had no itching since.

Have you considered specific allergies as a culprit? (fleas, food, environmental, seasonal, cleaners, etc?)

Could it be a nervous/neurological reaction to something in your Florida home? Something that makes him become a nervous scratcher?

Is there a vet dermatologist or allergist in your area? It might be worth seeing a specialist to get to the bottom of this -- and cheaper in the long run than repeated vet visits where the underlying cause is not treated.

I hope some wiser folks come along and offer suggestions. Itching and scratching himself until your pup bleeds is an awful thing to go through. :(

Thank you for your help, when I took him to the vet here in florida, he told me that he felt it was pollen that might be causing the problem. went up north 3 weeks later no problem. I think i will change foods any recomendations on type of foods

if it is a pollen problem then why change food?

I live in a farming community and each fall during harvest time I had a dog that would develop seasonal 'itchies' on her skin. I would take her to the vet once or twice during the season to get an allergy shot (benedryl) and within an hr she was fine.
