Guest greytful4
This past May, Kylie broke her middle toe on her hind leg. She had a three way spiral fracture and was in a splint for a while. While her toe is seems healed , it still hasn't "knuckled up". She still does a lot of zoomies in the house on carpet but I was wondering would it be safe for her to do a fun run again?I'm so scared it would rebreak ! Guest GreysAndMoreGreys
Well it's been about 5 months so she has had MORE than enough time to heal up. And don't worry yourself about her breaking that toe in the same area again. Look at it like a weld on metal. It's stronger in that area then it ever was before due to all the calcium build up. She might limp a bit when she first gets out there and gets going but the more she does it the less she will limp That knuckled up look happens quite often on hounds who have had broken toes. greysmom
I would think that if she's not having pain when she's using her foot/toe that she would be ready to try a short outdoor zoomie. I might try and start her out on a short one. If she hasn't run in a while her stamina isn't going to be what it was anyway. It may be a bit painful the first couple times and she may limp a little. greysmom Quote Chris - Mom to: Felicity (DeLand), and Andi (Braska Pandora) siggy by Chris Harper, on Flickr Angels: Libby (Everlast), Dorie (Dog Gone Holly), Dude (TNJ VooDoo), Copper (Kid's Copper), Cash (GSI Payncash), Toni (LPH Cry Baby), Whiskey (KT's Phys Ed), Atom, Lilly
Guest LolasMom
My girl dislocated a toe back in April. There is scar tissue that's built up to protect the joint but I still vet wrap the foot (hold her toes in place) when she runs in grassy fields or at the beach...just to play it safe. She's been fine at home and in the yard doing zoomies and seems to understand that the vet wrap means greater freedom. Others here I'm sure have more experience with breaks. Guest meakah
Since it sounds like it hangs down a bit (you mentioned it not being knuckled up), I can understand your concern. Does it look like it may be easy to stub or snag? If that is the case, I would maybe consider getting her some kind of boot for that foot for when she runs. If it doesn't hang out much I would take the chance and let her run and play as normal. I should add...wrapping it with vet wrap as LolasMom mom mentioned may do the trick to keep the toe tucked in tight instead of abnormally hanging out. Guest Vinnie
Hi Anne & Kylie! Baby Gus here - my mama has been letting me do zoomies in our yard and extra walkies and my paw is really knuckling back up now! I have to run more and walk more so that I can build my muscles up now. Mama said my vet suggested putting a block under my good foot and walking with me for about 5 minutes each time, a few times a day - this makes you use the healed paw more and builds it up again. I didn't need it though, just fun zoomies and playing in the office. Wish we were closer, we could play with Zali and have a broken toe club! Have fun doing zoomies! Nosey kisses & love from Baby Gus - ok Mama, and Gracie too! Edited October 21, 2008 by Vinnie
silverfish
I would just take it slow and see how she goes. As Greysandmoregreys says, the area of the break will be very strong - you only need worry about snagging, or strain being put on another part of the foot/toe/leg by the new position of the toe while she builds up her strength again. Don't start with a fun run right off, build her up with short runs first, and on her own so she can go at her own pace without getting excited or distracted by other dogs. It's true what they say though - use it or lose it. The best way to avoid future injuries is to get her strong and running again, and the toe muscles and ligaments will improve! Guest greytful4
Thanks everyone! She does a lot of zoomies in the house and I figured since she can do it here she should be good on sand then! I'm just a worry wart mom!
Guest LynnM
Long, slow rehab is the key to getting a dog on track after an orthopedic injury. Generally that means conditioning via leash walks for a long time, then free movement by him/herself, then encouraging a gallop by him/herself (while still leash walking and allowing free movement), then giving the dog the opportunity to chase on a straightaway (you do this for a LONG time while also free running and leash walking/jogging), and the final thing is giving the dog the opportunity to turn at speed while chasing.... if he or she is going to hurt themself, it's going to happen then. Once the dog can turn at speed, then he or she is finally introduced to chasing, at speed, with other dogs. Toes are a PITA... once one goes, it's not usually the same one that you have problems with, but others in succession. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes not. Either way, it's not going to impact life as a pet. Lynn
rycezmom
Hi Anne! I had to rein Gustopher P Jones in the day after he broke his toe in a couple of places. he didn't care whether there was a splint on or not!!! He was hellbent to chase the terrorists and carjacking bugs and such in the yard. And if he couldn't find any of those he would run like a lunatic woofing at himself around and around the yard. Had to leash walk him because I was afraid he was going to break his leg running in the splint. Didn't stop him from being a crazy man in the house either.
