Ligament Damage In Rear Knee

Casey went to the vet the end of June and had an x-ray on his rear right leg b/c he had been limping. The vet manipulated his leg and said he was clearly in pain. She said that he had some ligament damage and to keep him quiet. He is already on Novox for his arthritis so she didn't want to prescribe anything else.

Well, 3 months later he doesn't seem to be any better. I thought that he was getting better until recently and now he is limping more on the back leg and even holds it up for short amounts of time. It seems to be worse after he has been standing on it for a while or when he gets up from laying down. Is there something else that I could/should be doing? Does ligament damage take this long to get better? Will it ever get better?

Casey is supposed to be going to the vet on Saturday for a nail trim and I will ask the vet what she thinks and if she can look at it again. I'm just afraid that there is something else that I could be doing to help him and I'm not doing it. Any suggestions would be great.

Not really.... you need to be more specific as to just which ligament is affected.

If we're talking about either a traumatic injury or the sort of knee defects that are hereditary (almost unheard of-rare in greyhounds), if 3 months of leash walking and restricted activity haven't improved things, then the next step is to consult with an orthopedic surgeon. Many knee defects and injuries can be surgically repaired and it's better to do it sooner than later.

I'm not sure which ligaments were affected. I didn't ask when she told me about it. I guess that I wasn't sure that it mattered b/c I figured the treatment would be the same no matter what. I will check when I bring him on Saturday.

Thanks for the advice about an orthopedic surgeon. That was my next thought as to what should be done.
