Guest KennelMom
We took our two old guys to the vet today - Grandpa for limping and Elvis because he refuses to eat enough...kind of an ongoing battle with him for the last few weeks. I was expecting the worst for Grandpa. Turns out, we have a 14 year old dog with the aches and pains of a 14 year old dog. His xrays looked great. Elvis had a dental and full blood panel done a few months ago and has been back to the vet once soon after for a general follow up and everything seemed OK. Took an xray today and his chest is full of tumors and fluid and the vet found a lump in his armpit that he suspects is chondrosarcoma. After looking at the xrays, our vet couldn't believe Elvis was still standing, much less walking around like nothing was really wrong. Greyhound stoicism. Other than an ultrasound to confirm what was obvious under the microscope and xray, there's really not much we can do. We're going to say goodbye on Saturday. He's only 12 1/2. I think I'm still in shock. I was so not expecting this today. :weep My strong, handsome Big Galoot...

Guest KennelMom
I'm so sorry, Heather. Can I ask.. what was Elvis' racing name? His racing name was Trips to Open. We adopted him and Casino two years ago from a vet clinic where they were blood donors. Casino passed from osteo shortly after she came home. They spent many years together, so I'm sure Cas will be there to greet him at the Bridge. The last month or so my mommy-radar has been pinging off the walls that something was wrong with someone. DH thought I was as he always does when I get that 'feeling' that one of the dogs is sick but there's nothing obvious. When Grandpa started limping I thought - crap. that's it. Even though Elvis has been a bit off his food lately, we were both expecting it to be something fixable. Thank you to everyone for your good thoughts and prayers. Guest Pipi5
I'm so sorry. Everytime I read that someone's doggie is off their food, I immediately think of last year when Dear was diagnosed with cancer. I hate cancer. I'm so sorry you have to go through this, but you have supported so many people here on GT...I know you'll get through this & go on to help someone else going through this. I wish I lived close enough to come over & hug you & we could sit on the porch & drink hot tea & laugh at doggie stories. This just sucks.

Guest Vinnie
OMG, how much more can we all take! We are so, so sorry to hear about Elvis. It is so hard to say goodbye and know if right or wrong - but if you look close enough and really listen, you'll know that you are doing the right thing for your precious galoot! Much better before the pain sets in. It doesn't make it any better - but in your heart you should know you are giving Elvis a most precious gift of love and dignity. We will keep you in our hearts and prayers. May his passing be peaceful and loving just as his days with you have always been. Sending hugs and scritches.
