What Do High Triglycerides Mean?

We're having annual bloodwork done on the rest of the pack, and we want to make sure we're *really* up on what all the numbers mean this time. A couple have come back with triglycerides in the high range, and tho' our vets aren't concerned, we'd like to know what this might mean. We weren't concerned about Nelly's kidney values soon enough, and we don't want to make the same mistake twice, if there *might* be something we should be looking into.

Anyone?

Thanks!

In humans, it means high cholesterol. I don't know if that is actually a problem in a dog though, something to ask the vet about.

Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). Godspeed Patrick (28 April 1999 - 5 August 2012), Murphy (23 June 2004 - 27 July 2013), Leo (1 May 2009 - 27 January 2020), and Henry (10 August 2010 - 7 August 2020), you were loved more than you can know.

Nay--no worries. Cholesterol in itself is not a problem in dogs--they don't get plaque build-up like we do, however, it can be an indicator for other underlying problems. Take, for example low cholesterol would be found in a dog with IBD. Triglycerides are from sugar fats--did your pup get into the M&M's before his blood draw???? :P:P:P

It's also a precursor of pancreatitis, so you're right to be concerned. We had a dog with hypertriglyceremia yet his cholesterol was in high normal range. He became very sick with pancreatitis but his amylase and lipase were also elevated. Your vets may not be worried because those last two levels were normal. It would still be worth having a discussion about this with your vets just to clarify why they're not worried and when to become worried. I say this because I fully admit to being a worry wart! :unsure

How "high" was the result? Was the pup fasted for 12-18 hours before the blood draw?

Good point about being fasted or not.

In our Cullen's case he was always fasted 18+ hours and he was still 507 at his highest. His blood also looked like strawberry milk shake even after fasting all those hours. It was vexing.
