Since the summer I noticed that Alan breathes heavy at times and associated it with the heat. He's never been fond of that. But since then he sometimes breathes heavy/pants and it sounds raspy at times that one day about 2 weeks ago, a neighbor asked me if he had asthma. So I'm putting this out there for some thoughts. He is having a check up this Wednesday and I will certainly bring this up to the new vet's attention.

I wonder if it could be pain related--panting can be a sign of pain? Just guessing though, talking to your vet is the right way to go.

Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). Godspeed Patrick (28 April 1999 - 5 August 2012), Murphy (23 June 2004 - 27 July 2013), Leo (1 May 2009 - 27 January 2020), and Henry (10 August 2010 - 7 August 2020), you were loved more than you can know.

I wonder if there's such a thing as exercise-induced asthma in dogs? I have ex-ind asthma and excessive heat is a big trigger for me, especially if the humidity's also high. Does it only happens after walks or zoomies?

Alan's not really able to do zoomies anymore, but it's only sometimes and it is during or after walks. Our walks aren't very far and some days are better than others. Just a new thing to add to the list for baby. Wait - do dogs get asthma???

How old is Alan? The reason I ask is because one of the early symptoms of Laryngeal Paralysis, not to scare you.

Alan is 11. He has rear leg weakness, glomerularnephritis, high blood pressure and pannus. With all of this, he is doing really well as I manage him carefully. I was thinking of LP, but scared to think about that as well - and I don't know too much about it.

In hindsight, that is about when Booker started to show very minor symptoms of his LP, we just didn't know about it at the time. Maybe a chat with your vet could help in this situation. Don't get too scared, it is better to know about it earlier than later, so that if surgery is necessary, it isn't too late, if you choose that option.

Has the vet checked his heart?

Oops, sorry, I posted twice!

He has a stage 2 heart murmur, that I know, but since he's going to a new vet on Wednesday, I'll see what she says. He' s such a sweet, sweet boy.

Heart problems can cause some breathing issues and coughing due to congestion in the lungs I believe. That's really all I know, but I'm sure your vet will be checking a number of things.

Sending healthy thoughts to your sweetheart.

The first sign I had of Sugar's heart problems was panting, but it was not exercise related, and you already know about his murmur. I'd have the vet take a look at his heart, but it's probably not that. Dogs do get asthma, so I'd ask about that too. :candle for handsome Alan
