This took me quite a while to figure out! :blush But I'm pretty sure she can't see straight on and uses her peripheral vision.

Spirit the Sassy Senior is a quirky girl! She's something dreamed up in mind of Tim Burton and I got lucky enough to find her on Craigslist!

Her backend does not seem to attached correctly to her front end... she's like two dogs... her backend is happy to dance the mambo at any moment. Her front end stands still! She's is the happiest old lady on the planet! She loves to run... and when she discovers something new - like a squeeky toy she hadn't noticed before she dances around like it fell straight from heaven... and that new toy joy lasts for days! Geez she nearly passed out when she had a rawhide... we won't even go into how she fell down at the first taste of chicken!

Eek... I'm getting off track. I noticed she would sometimes walk into things... and sometimes if something is on the kitchen floor she will give it a WIIIIIIDE birth when walking past it. When she's mambo-ing for my attention and I say "gimme a kiss" she'll run over and smash right into my face licking wildly. When I give her a treat she wouldn't take it straight on she would have me kinda hand it to the side. I thought all this time she was quirky... that is until today.

I had given out the morning treat (which was dehydrated duck - a favorite at our house) Spirit was still enjoying her zoomies (she is by far my most lively hound... and she's the oldest) When I came inside with her I told her it was treat time so she ran to her bed... I had her duck in my pocket and I took it out and had it in front of her and she didn't take it. So I'm talking to her and she's not reacting... then Brooklyn barked cuz she wanted the duck and when Spirit turned her head away to look at Brooklyn she saw the duck and snatched the treat out of my hand.

For the last half hour or so I've been trying to test her eyes and I'm almost positive she can not see straight on.

I'm not sure what to do. I'll take her to the vet after I return from Dewey. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm guessing it's some sort of macro degeneration.

just to add: Spirit turned 11 in July.

Take her to a veterinary ophthalmologist. Specialists often catch what even a skilled regular vet can miss.

Memphis has Pannus and I've caught pannus in a hound I was sitting for... I dont think it's pannus.

also... Let me add. She does not seem to have any sort of milky-ness (sp?) to her eyes. She doesn't have anything coming up on the edges. She has an ugly sty like tumor she's had the whole time I'm had her. And when I asked the vet when I was in with Guinness he said to monitor because removal is usually worse then leaving it since it doesn't bother her.

:nod :nod :nod We have to get a referral from our regular vet to see the specialist, but with eyes I always request a referral.

You know Amanda, it took us to long to realize Emmy was losing her sight because they have a coping mechanism that is unbelievable. Emmy was coping so well that we totally missed it. She quite coping well when she totally lost her sight. My book on living with blind dogs suggests using a cotton ball and tossing it in the air and see if they track it. You could do this from the side and front to gage exactly where she is seeing and where she isn't.

One thing we learned is that it takes a long time for the sense of smell to compensate for the loss of sight too so she may not be smelling the treat either.

I have to agree with everyone here, get her to a veterinary ophthalmologist. I thought Carl had Pannus, took him to our regular vet (a very decent vet) who also thought it was Pannus. When he wasn't responding to treatment like I thought he should, I requested a referral. It turns out it's not Pannus, but, preliminarily a diagnosis of corneal dystrophy. It's best to go to a specialist, for sure!

Sending good thoughts for Spirit with a positive outcome. She sure sounds like a character! Please let us know what happens.
