Guest greytloves
A frinds grey had a similiar thing. I went with her to the vet and my DH was there and just happened to notice a discloration on his belly. After many negative tests results she took him to A&M. Turns out he had some sort of accident while playing with others that caused a bruise on him which ruptured his spleen. He went to A&M, they are the ones that found this out, and took it out. 8 months later the boy is healthy as can be. You may want to contemplate either sending his records or going with him down to A&M. They have a fantastic diagnostic group down there. greyhndz
Steven went to the greyhound-savvy GALT vet today. The doctor did an ultrasound on him and said she sees fluid in his stomach, where there should be none, and a 'fuzziness' by his pancreas on the x-rays. All of his liver values are very high on the blood test still, and he is still running a fever, urinating blood and is dehydrating again, so we are going to have him be stabilized at the emergency animal hospital for the weekend, then have him transferred to a specialist on Monday morning. In the meantime, they'll do a more thorough ultrasound, do more x-rays, keep him on IV antibiotics and fluids, and we'll await the results of the tick panel they sent off. She's mostly concerned that there is a mass in his stomach and warned me that exploratory surgery is a very real possiblility. Oh, boy... Steven is having such a rough time, as is mummy! Did the vet mention if his platelet count has remained stable? And how is his kidney function - BUN/creatinine? Courtney, you might want to PM "tigger" (Kathy) who also had to deal with a critically-ill dog this week. Her vet, too, thought she was seeing a huge mass on the spleen when she did a quick ultrasound, but the ultrasound done by the radiologist showed no evidence of a mass - just a huge collection of fluid in the abdomen (ascites). So try not to panic about what your vet saw on ultrasound. I'm sure the radiologist will also want to look carefully at the kidneys, and possibly do a biopsy at the same time. One day at a time... Steven is in the best place for him to be stabilized over the weekend, though I know how painful it is for you to have him there. On Monday you'll have more answers, and in the meantime the E-clinic is keeping him hydrated and watching him carefully. Hang in there, and take care of you, too! Guest GreytMuse
I was able to visit Steven at lunch time today, and get him to eat some more chicken and rice (if I gave it to him by hand). He was on his 3rd bag of IV fluids and had kept the doxycycline down, thank goodness. He was distressed, panting, shaking, and wouldn't look at me. He was in a large kennel, maybe 3' x 5', with a pad and blanket on top, so I was very happy to see that he was provided a comfortable place to lay down. That seems silly to worry about, but you know how boney these babies are. Hopefully, there will be nothing else to report until Monday when he gets transferred to the Internal Specialist, Dr. Bronstad (an A&M vet). The GALT folks and the greyhound vet reassured me that he is very knowledgeable about greys and will do the absolute best by Steven. I do plan on handing him Dr. Feeman's report: Greyhound Medical Idiosyncrasies just because it will make me feel better. As Dr. Soileau, the GH vet, said yesterday, "We have learned so much about Greyhounds and they keep teaching us new things. Greyhounds are a very, very different breed of dog." It's good to know that I do have A&M as a resource, as well as Dr. Couto if there are any mysteries that Dr. Bronstad can't answer. Those are wonderful suggestions, thank you! To answer Houndznigz: I did not ask about his platelets, as of his 3rd blood test yesterday, they remained low. His BUN/creatinine have been within normal limits on every test. I'll PM Kathy and see if she has any ideas for us. Thank you again to everyone who is praying and hoping with me for Steven to be diagnosed quickly and returned to health. It helps so much to know that your love and wisdom is there for us. Greyhound people are without a doubt the absolute best.
