Guest Dillymom
She went to jump in the car this afternoon and managed to rip her nail off. I got the bleeding to stop and had it bandaged but then noticed she had bled through the bandage tonight. So I took it off and cleaned it real good in warm soapy water and rebandaged it. I called the evet and they said that if the bleeding was under control that there was no reason to bring her in. I plan to call the her regular vet first thing in the morning. Is there anything else I can do for her? I know it has to hurt but I hesitate to give her aspirin since it's a blood thinner.
CaliforniaGreys
OUCH!!! What is with all the nail problems lately? Poor Lola. Any chance you have any Tramadol on hand? Guest Dillymom
Nope no Tramadol. We've never had any accidents before.
CaliforniaGreys
Nope no Tramadol. We've never had any accidents before. Depending on the policy your vet has, and if you have a history with him/her, maybe you could call in the am, explain what happened and they will give it to you. Misty's on it every 6 hours. It's a minor injury but it hurts!! I hope she feels better. You know Misty's solution, ice cream!! Guest SoulsMom
The vet tomorrow will probably give you antibiotics and pain killers. When Soul had to have his cut off he was on Rimadyl for three days, but after that he didn't really need them. Just keep cleaning it until you get the antibiotics, to prevent infection. Poor Lola! I know all too well how that feels for our babies Edited to add: Soul doesn't even have the "nub" anymore. It had to be cut down all the way to his pad. MerlinsMum
Poor Lola This happened to Merlin last winter. Blood EVERYWHERE (as you described in another post). I had never had this happen before, so I didn't know whether to go to the e-vet or what. Friday night, idiots on the road, a bad storm heading towards us, etc. I posted on GT and got some great advice Anyway, we just waited for our regular vet to open, and kept it clean all the time. Used the disposable doggie boots and did what we could to prevent infection. He didn't even need antibiotics in the end... just kept it nice and clean and after a long, long, long time the nail started to grow again. I agree with Amber - just keep it clean for now (it looks VERY clean from the picture you posted). Merlin didn't seem to be in any pain at all, but every dog is different. Guest houndlover
Poor Lola. That has got to hurt. I agree that I wouldn't give her any kind of asprin if she is already bleeding. I happen to have Rimadyl and Metacam on hand so I would be inclined to do something like that just to get her through until tomorrow but it doesn't sound like you have anything like that. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Guest Dillymom
We just got back from the vet. They put more qwik stop on it and then super glue to seal it. They didn't want her in a bandage unless she's trying to chew at the foot. Even without the bandage on she won't stand on it so they gave us tramadol and said to keep it clean and dry as much as possible. If she's still hurting by Thurs I'm supposed to bring her back in. CaliforniaGreys
Thanks for the update Tracey, I'm glad Lola has some Tramadol. Give her a day or maybe two and she'll start putting her foot down. Better un-bandaged because I have realized with Misty that the bandage rubs up against that area and causes it to hurt even more. I'm just so glad that she'll have something for the pain. Extra ice cream mom! Guest LindsaySF
Ouch! What are the odds of that happening? Glad to hear she's got some meds from the vet. Hopefully it heals soon!

Guest Greyt_dog_lover
My guy Bart did nearly the exact thing to his remaining dew claw the FIRST time he was allowed to run offleash. I was taking him inside and wiped off his feet (muddy day) and there was blood all over me. he never even made a sound. It was hanging on by a thread of quick. I took it in my hand, and ripped it off. We (wife and I) cleaned the wound, put some neosporine on it, and completed the field dressing. We left it wrapped for a few days, then took the bandage off. Bart didnt mess with it at all and it has healed completely on its own, of course the nail never grew back. I think this is one of those things that looks a lot worse than it really is. Did you ever rip a nail off your finger when you were a kid. I did a few times (i was a pretty active little boy, LOTS of trips to the ER). It hurts like the devil for a little while, then the pain goes away and you forget about it. I hope she is back to normal soon. Guest Dillymom
I was kind of suprised with the vet who treated her. My regular vet was on vaca so this guy was filling in for her. He said that most dogs wouldn't need a pain medicine for this injury and that she was being a little wimpy for needing it. I'm not going to make a stink about it b/c my regular vet would never say something like that and we totally love her. She worked in an office that was contracted to a local track for several years and so she has a deep respect for Greys and a real understanding of them. I would have smacked that guy, he doesn't know what he's talking about! GH's are so stoic, even when they're drama queens with us. Wonder how he would feel if we ripped his nail off? He better be careful, we'll have Lola's Merlin put a spell on him Edited September 15, 2008 by cbudshome Quote Missing my little Misty who took a huge piece of my heart with her on 5/2/09, and Ekko, on 6/28/12 For the sick, the lost, and the homeless
