Guest Matt Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Wouldn't want to go too long without a canine health crisis; it's been 9 months since the other dog's ACL surgery, I guess it was time. Gromit our grey was just diagnosed with pannus. Our vet got us a next-day appt with the vet ophthalmologist, he says we caught it early and he's optimistic that Gromit will respond well to treatment. So I'm looking for doggie sunglasses to block the UV light -- I've tried Doggles, but their shape just doesn't work on Gromit's face (that greyhound nose, you know). Anyone had experience with specific brands that work well for that distinguished greyhound profile? Thanks much for your help Quote
inugrey Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I honestly don't know of any other brand. I'm chiming in because we tried out doggles for future wear in the opthamologist's office and the fit was snug as a bug. Did they have the large or medium on his face maybe it is as simple as going up or down a size to get the straps to adjust to fit his face properly. Is it that the strap that connects the two eye pieces is too long? I'm pretty sure we put a medium size on Inu and then had the face straps maxed out on length to fit around his face. Does that make sense? Sirocco_Nikki Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Sirocco has had pannus for several years. We don't use sunglasses for him (he would find a way to eat them) and his pannus is still very well controlled. Check with the opthamologist to see if they are needed. CaliforniaGreys Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I have a few friends whose Greys have it. The ones that don't use them just make sure that the dog is not in the sun. Houndtime Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Brandy had controlled pannus (in remission) and she would squint in the very bright sun, but never wore the goggles. Paul was just diagnosed and he is getting drops now. He doesn't seem to any problem with the sun. Is your dog squinting or does he stay out in the sun a lot. Tallgreydogmom Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 I have used the doggles. It's easier to just keep them out of the sunlight. TheFullHouse Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Petsmart carries a different brand of doggles. Guest whatahound Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Ace has pannus also. I got his doggles at: The medium size fit him best. http://www.peepers.com/goggles/dog-goggles...1+7856+7883.cfm Quote
Guest jziegler Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Morgan was recently diagnosed with pannus. Even before the diagnosis, an animal communicator told us that the sun hurts her eyes, so we got her sunglasses. We went with the doggles brand K9 optix, not the regular doggles. http://doggles.com/k9optix.html I figures that I hate goggles, so why wouldn't a dog? Sizing is a bit difficult, they really aren't designed with greys in mind. The Medium is the best. A bit small in the bridge of the nose, but good otherwise. Large has a better size bridge, but is too big. I've posted this before, but here she is wearing them(the large): Now that we have medium, I'll try to get a photo with them on as well. We got extra pairs so that all the dogs can have matching ones. The sunhat sunglasses combo is probably good for her eyes, but she doesn't like them together, unfortunately... Jim Quote
Guest MnMDogs Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Mara has pannus, and we've been considering using them - but she is doing really well without. We just try to keep her out of the sun when it's brightest, or she's awfully squinty. Quote
Guest KennelMom Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Our pannus boy, Caesar, would have seriously hated us if we made him wear them. We were able to control his pannus without doggles for many years. He was never one to spend tons of time in the sun anyway, so it was pretty easy to limit his exposure to bright sunlight. Doggles are what I've always seen greyhounds wear, so possibly you just didn't have the proper size? Quote
seeh2o Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Carl was diagnosed with Pannus in June. I bought him some Doggles, they aren't the best fitting, they look stupid and he isn't too keen on them. Like others have posted, it's just easier to keep him out of the sun between 10 - 3. Guest meakah Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Koda has Pannus and does well with just the drops...mainly. I do have Doggles for her (size medium) but I have to admit I don't really use them much. They do fit her well but she is not all that keen on wearing them for longer periods of time. I find her eyes are worse in the wintertime due to the reflection off of the snow so I try to use them more then. I am not aware of other brands. Here is a pic of her with Doggles: Quote
Guest Matt Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 (edited) Thanks guys. Regarding your questions: - The vet said they couldn't hurt -- since we've just been diagnosed we're still working out which drops will work, etc, we don't really know how sensitive he is to UV at this point. - He loves the backyard -- especially finding a warm spot of grass in the sun to sprawl in. I have this image of him in the crate at the track, looking through a small window at the end of the kennel, seeing a patch of sunlit grass and thinking "that looks nice". I can't keep him out of the sun and grass, he enjoys it too much. - The eyecups on medium doggles were barely big enough, he couldn't really keep his eyes open, and when they shifted they were getting on his eye (he's a big grey). The bridge on large doggles was too long, so they didn't fit well over his eyes. Morgan, Ace & Koda are some cool looking greyhounds. I'll try the Doggles-brand sunglasses -- how big is Morgan, Gromit is 78 lbs and taller than most greys, large might be a good size for him. Thanks again, appreciate the ideas. Morgan is on the small side, about 65 lbs, and not too tall. If Gromit is that large, than maybe the large would work. It's really hard to figure out, they obviously were designed for breeds with a different facial shape. Jim Quote
