Guest Grapehound
Last night I was looking at Raisin and noticed that she is getting some spots on her nose. They aren't as pink as they are pale brown. They really seemed to appear almost overnight. I've seen pink-nosed dogs before, but it doesn't look like that pattern. It's kind of scattered dots, worse just above her lip then tapers off between her nostrils and only a little on the top of the nose. It is not bloody, oozy, or swollen looking. Here's a (not great) picture.... I think the picture makes it almost look worse than it is. My two theories: 1) I bought her a "slow-down" food bowl about 2 weeks ago which is plastic. Prior to this, she always ate out of ceramic bowls. 2) Earlier this summer, her annual blood tests showed an elevated alkaline phosphatase level. It was a little lower the second time she was tested, so since she has no symptoms or other issues, we were taking a wait and see approach and were going to remeasure again the end of this month. I don't know if anything that can affect that test can affect nose color. Should I take her to the vet? If it is the plastic in the bowl, does the color return once you stop using the plastic bowl? The "slow down" ridges in the bowl were helping quite a bit. Does anyone know if they make these type of bowls in anything but plastic? I appreciate any thoughts!! edited to fix picture link Edited September 8, 2008 by Grapehound
Guest Ola
I've heard about plastic bowls causing this, and also some dogs lose some nose pigment during the winter (which clearly isn't the case now ). I'd stop using the plastic bowl - we're learning a lot of new things about the dangers of plastic recently anyway.
Tallgreydogmom
I agree with the plastic bowl. Think about something creative you can put in ceramic bowls to slow her down. Something to take up space. Quote Then God sent the Greyhound to live among man and remember. And when the Day comes, God will call the Greyhound to give Testament, and God will pass judgment on man. Guest Ola
Just a thought - you know those "puppy pans" you can get, so that several puppies can eat around the bowl at the same time? Maybe that would work similarly to your current bowl? Usually when I see them they're stainless steel, something like this:
Guest vahoundlover
I'd quit using the plastic bowl and see what happens.
Guest Grapehound
Thanks, that's a good idea about the puppy pans. It also reminded me I've heard of people trying bundt cake pans, so maybe I can try that too. She's been eating out of her ceramic bowl since Sunday. I'll keep watching and see if I notice any changes from here out. Thanks, I feel better!
