Has Anyone Seen Anything Like This?

Mystery developed this sore on his left rear leg about a week ago. Mystery only has 3 legs and when he starts running like a maniac in the yard he sometimes will wipe out and I thought maybe this was a scrape from one of his crazy moments in the yard. But it wasn't going away and even appears to have gotten a little bigger. The bump is a deep red, on the harder side and it has a rough texture on the outside. I do have a vet appointment for him on Wednesday to have it looked at but I thought maybe some of you would know what this might be. Thanks for looking and for any input you might have.

It could be a hemangiosarcoma. They are usually benign growths that often can be left alone unless they get too big.

Here is one on Monty. That is a nickel for scale.

That looks a lot like the one Carmen had. The vet gave me some liquid medicine and it went away in about a week. Give Mystery kisses for me and Carmen :)

Belle just had one removed from the inside of her elbow on Thursday and it took 5 staples to close it. The doc wasn't worried about it so she just took it and two others off. She is healing like a champ now. We are watching a couple of funky looking ones on her belly that might be melanomas.

Good luck on the doc visit. Keep us posted.

That looks like the thing that Mango had removed from her toe a few years ago. My vet said he would have left it alone except that it was in a spot that could easily get irritated. Hope that your vet agrees that it's nothing to worry about.

Looks like it could be a Histiocytoma (a/k/a button tumor). One of our girlies had one soon after we got her. Our vet chose to begin with the least agressive approach first which worked well in a few weeks without the need for surgery. We treated with two rounds of antibiotics back to back, and steroid drops several times a day right onto the tumor. It took about a week to start to see any results, but once it started to go away, it did so rapidly.

It's always best to have a vet look anyway just in case. Let us know how Mystery makes out at the vet.

I was thinking possibly a button tumor also. Billy has had 2 tumors similar to that removed in the last 3 years and he hasn't had any more pop up since last year. I never had them biopsied but the vet thought that they were probably benign.

Hope Mystery is feeling better soon. Let us know what the vet thinks. :grouphug

It looks like a histiocytoma to me but it's best to ask your vet to do a needle biopsy to make sure it's nothing more sinister.

Thank you for all of the feedback! It also eased some anxiety a little to read that it might not be a big deal at all. Keeping my fingers crossed. :goodluck I will post again tomorrow after we see the vet.

Beth, I will pass on your kisses to Mystery but Jacob might be very jealous if his brother is getting kisses from Miss Carmen.

Well then by all means give Jacob kisses too. But then we can't leave out Hunter, however he will probably be asleep on the couch and won't even notice the kisses on his tummy :)

I actually meant histiocytoma. Monty's was benign but did get surgically removed as it got quite big. Good luck.

:lol Yes, my little, old man will probably be asleep on the sofa but he does love his smooches! I will plant some smooches on Danny's nose too & that way all of the boys will be covered in kisses from Miss Carmen. Tell Carmen we all send kisses back to her as well.:kiss2

We are just in from Mystery's vet appointment. The vet hinks it could be a Mass Cell Tumor or Histiocytoma. She aspirated some cells to check out and is going to get back to me with what she finds and how she wants to treat. Now we wait............

Will update as soon as we hear something. Thanks again for the input & support! :)

I go for a Histiocytoma too. But when they first appeared on Wallace, we had them surgically removed and tested because often they are hard to tell apart by sight alone, from other things.

That was the same differential diagnosis for Monty, and it turned out to be a benign histiocytoma. I am hoping for the same for you!

Okay, I had a message from the vet today regarding the cells she aspirated. She said that she could not see anything obvious so she sent the slides out to a pathologist. There were not many cells on the slide but what the pathologist saw was Neutrofilic Hystiocydic Inflammation (I am sure this is not spelled correctly but I tried spelling it the way it sounded) which are inflammatory cells. They said that this type of inflammation is non-specific and usually associated with non-infectious diseases such as a foreign body penetration in the area, trauma or neoplasia (cancer). The vets recommendation is to put Animax Ointment on it 2-3 times a day, for the next 10-14 days and if it has not gone away then remove it completely and biopsy.

So, again we wait.............

Does any of this mean anything to anyone?

Thanks!

They said that this type of inflammation is non-specific and usually associated with non-infectious diseases such as a foreign body penetration in the area, trauma or neoplasia (cancer).

Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell. Histiocytes are a macrophage cell (they "eat" foreign invaders). So it does sound like something "invaded", and these cells are responding to that. Whether that something is an infection like bacteria, or something physical like a cactus spine, etc, not sure.

OR... there are so many immune cells there because they are growing and dividing rapidly, neoplasia. Neoplasms are abnormal growths of cells, tumors basically. But not all of them are cancerous. They can be benign, pre-cancer, or malignant.

If the cells looked cancerous I bet the vet would recommend removal of the lump right away. The fact that they are going to try Animax ointment first (which is antibacterial and antifungal) makes me think they are leaning towards an infection being the cause.

Good luck, I hope it is just a little infection!

If it had been a mast cell tumor, they should have seen mast cells in the aspirate... so it's probably not that! :colgate

(And if it was a mast cell tumor, it should have gotten a little bigger or puffy if you squeeze it)

Hugs to Mystery-
