Pharmaceutical Componding

Has anyone here had to use a pharmaceutical compounding company? One of Annie's eye drops Tacrolimus Aqueaus Solution .02% seems to be a speciality item that a typical pharmacy can't fill and I've tried every pharmacy in the area. Luckily there is a compounding company in Worcester, but they seem to be closed on the weekends....

Might check around your local major hospitals. My mom gets her special stuff from major hospital's "home health" unit.

We have to have Saint's Potassium Bromide and Emmy's Trilostane compounded at a compounding pharmacy. We've had excellent service with both pharmacy's that we use and the prices haven't been really that bad. Unfortunately our local one is closed on the weekends also. The one that fills Emmy's meds though, Wedgewood out of New Jersey is open on Saturdays.

There's one in Fall River, but I don't know if it's open weekends.

There's a vet compounding pharmacy in Gainesville FL. It's owned by Dr. Roger Clemmons at vet prof who does research on degenerative myelopathy. That won't help if you need something today, but may do mail-order work on weekends.

ETA I would also check w U Mass Med School.

Hospitals... why didn't I think of that!

When I read degenerative myelopathy, a bell went off in my head and remembered something else our vet said about Annie's spine issues ... he actually mentioned DM as a distict possibility because of the dx of her other autoimmune issues of her eyes, now I'm in a panic, crap!

Roadrunner Pharmacy. Located in Arizona. I'm in Miami. My doggie opthamologist faxes them my prescription for Taco for Gus. Its the one pharmacy she recommends. It is shipped either that day or the next. If I call them or e-mail them that I am running low, it shows up usually with 3 days. As it should be refridgerated, the turn around time is pretty good. Gus gets his gtts twice a day and the prescrition usually last 2 - 3 months at about $48.00. They are dependable and very pleasant to work with, both online or on the phone.

I wish I could give you some specific info... the less specific info is that at least one of the major chains (Walgreens?) now has a centralized compounding pharmacy. (I know because I recently met one of the pharmacists who works for one of the centralized compounding pharmacies) (This means that at the corporate level, someone realizes the size of the market for this, but it isn't cost-effective for every single pharmacy to be trained and outfitted to the special compounding).) I'm all in favor of supporting local businesses, but if you find that you don't have one in your area, check with the pharmacist at one of your local chain pharmacies and ask if they have such a service.

Eye drops have to be prepared under sterile conditions (not available in every pharmacy). The compounding pharmacies usually are able to do some basic stability studies to see how long the preparation will be stable, storage conditions etc -- or have access to colleagues or databases to sort it out. Here is a customer service number for the Professional Compounding Centers of America -- it was on the patient information page and said to call if you needed help finding a compounding pharmacy in your area: 1.800.331.2498. I don't know if they have weekend hours.

Also, was the vet's office able to give you any ideas? Did they send you home with even a small amount of the drops? Usually vets (and human docs) locate someone that they know can fill these specialty prescriptions before they write them...

I hope this helps in your quest.

There's one in arlington, open until 6 today.

http://www.maidapharmacy.com/contact.htm I've used them for hormones before.

I've called them, the compounding specialist isn't in today, so I'll call on Monday. Thanks!

Our vet doesn't have this medication on hand, so they weren't able to send me home with any but I do have the other meds for her eyes.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to be able to get anything today... but since Annie hasn't had these drops for a very long time, I'm sure waiting until the beginning of the week won't hurt too much. I'm just being a tad neurotic :)

We got Whistler's tacrolimus from his veterinary ophthalmologist--like you, we couldn't find it at any local pharmacy (and we're in a big metro area). Tacrolimus has to be refrigerated, which would make me the teensy-tiniest bit wary of getting it by mail order (altho' I'm sure you can, and it would be fine). I'd see if any of your larger local animal hospitals (likely the emergency vets) have opthalmology departments that can fill this for you.

I talked with our regular vet today to let him know of the difficulty that I'm having getting this script filled. He is going to call the opthamologist who originally saw Annie in 2006 on Monday and find out where the best place, locally is to get the meds. The thing is, we are not in a big area (no big vet hospitals) but I am willing to drive to get this filled for her. Hopefully, we will be able to get this filled without too much of an issue. Thanks for the hea

There are quite a few veterinary (and human) compounding pharmacies online. Even major online pharmacies like Costco can do this. I used a compounding pharmacy in Washington, DC Center Pet Pharmacy that did a very good job, very quickly. But there are many others, and here's a list of some of them: compounding vet pharmacies.

Good luck!

Can you just order the med itself online, rather than having it compounded?

Nope!

I renew/refill my hounds meds on-line, fax or by calling.

My DH works at a compounding pharmacy in Nashua NH, as one of the compounding techs. He would be more than willing to help you out with any questions if you want to PM me. I know they do mail orders, too, and there are a lot of other places that do as well.
