Arthritis Therapy For Kidney Kids?

So now that we're getting Nelly's kidney disease under control, we need to think about how we're going to treat her other serious ailments.

She has quite severe arthritis in one leg, due to a bad break as a puppy that never healed properly. For the past five years, she's been doing beautifully on quarterly Adequan injections and twice-weekly Rimadyl. She went from being a cranky dog to a dog that loves to jump up and give hugs. We never saw quite that improvement with any over-the-counter glucosamine supplements, but we're willing to give them another try now. According to the Adequan website, it should "be used with caution in idividuals with renal impairment." I suspect, although I of course have no proof, that the Adequan may have hastened her kidney failure, although I can't regret the five great years she's had on it.

The specialist gave us a prescription for Tramadol, to be used instead of the Rimadyl, but I have to admit--it scares me a little. Isn't it a pretty serious pain killer? I'm really not sure I want Nelly doped up on opioids.

Nelly is only 8, and hopefully we'll have a couple of years yet with her. :hope I don't want her to spend them in pain.

Suggestions? Thanks!
