Previously Dislocated Toe?

Ok, so one of Hiway's back feet has a toe that seems rather strange...instead of the nail pointing down like all the other ones, it points straight out. Doesn't seem to cause him any pain, and he'll let me squeeze it without a problem, but it looks like it was dislocated at one time, and has now healed this way.

He WAS a courser, working primarily in the woods, so a dislocated toe seems probable, but would they not pop back in? It's one of his middle toes, on his right back foot (the "ring toe").

Any ideas? Don't worry about it?

What do you mean by pointing staight out? Straight forward? Upwards? Do you have a pic? Could have blown a tendon, could also have just broken the nail off coursing coyotes and it grew back funny. A broken P-3 could heal funny like that, too. As long as the nail isn't hitting any of the other toes and he's not otherwise painful, it's likely not an issue. If it's an old break, it might get arthritic as he ages, though.

My Ham has a dislocated toe on his right front paw. The track told me about it when I adopted him (that's why he never raced) anyway, it never caused any problems. Sometimes it goes out and he cries and holds up his foot and I slide my hand over it and push it back into place, but it hasn't happened in the last year or so. You should be able to slide it back into place easily if you run your hand over it and slowly push it straight.

Speck has a funny-looking toe on his front foot like that. I chalk it up to being one of his many quirks, as it's never given him any issues. I guess you have to decide that for yourself with your hound. Do you have a pic?
