Tylan Powder For Claustridium

For those of you who helped with my Giardia questions and the big D, thank you so much! The Panacur didn't help very much, but in the meantime, another test result came back. My little girl has too high of a count for Claustridium (I hope thats the right word!) It is a bacteria in the gut that everyone has, she just has an overgrowth.

My vet has never had a positive case of this. She was prescribed Tylan powder (Tylosin), which is used for swine, turkeys, and other farm animals.

Things seem to be improving now!

Any info out there or experiences with it would be greatly appreciated.

I've had Dandi on Tylan for almost a year with good results. We started with about 1/8 tsp twice daily, and now he only needs about 1/16 tsp once daily. Together with finding a different food, it seems to do the job.

BTW - clostridium difficile is a common problem in humans who have been on antibiotics. It can result in severe diarrhea, and requires treatment with either flagyl or vancomycin. Even then, it can be resistant to treatment.

I treated my greyhound's Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) with Tylan for about one year. I filled empty gel caps with the powder using an inexpensive capsule filling device. There were no bad side effects, from what I could tell. The Tylan helped, but did not really fix the problem. It seems weird and counterintuitive, but putting him on a raw diet is what fixed the problem.

Fields had a problem with bacterial overgrowth about 3 years ago and after 6 weeks of getting 1/2 teasp a day sprinkled in his food, he was a new dog. He tends to get flair-ups of IBD so I keep Tylan on hand for him. He's never experienced any side-effects.

Our Suzy has taken it when her colitus acts up. But our vet has it put in capsles since it taste really bad and it's easier to get the dog to take it if they can't taste it. She's never had any problems with taking it.

Yeah, I was going to say - the stuff tastes horrible! My chow hound refused to eat when I mixed the powder in, so I tasted a bit of it... ICK... wicked bitter.

I agree that it tastes horrible. I put it in a capsule and that worked great.

Hey! I had C. Diff. last summer (Clostridium difficile) It was horrible! I caught it while in the hospital getting my gall bladder removed. Does anyone in your house have it? Be very careful picking up poop...that is how it is spread. I was on Flagyl for 5 days then ended up back in the hospital, so they put me on Vancomycin for 15 days....The spores stays alive on hard surfaces for months....be careful and bleach anything that she has pooped on. I'd even hire a company to come do a bleach wash on the yard.
