Has anyone used Promethazine for their grey? My vet prescribed it for Alan since he has nasty allergic flea bites and is restless at night (probably b/c of it). He was taking Tavist, but he's still suffering w/ the itchiness.

Haven't used it for greys, but it is given for nausea with a side effect being somnolence. Another nasty side effect is extreme constipation. If he is on it for any length of time, you will have a real problem with the constipation.

Maybe somebody else can chime in with some other medication ideas for insomnia.

Have you tried Benadryl and it didn't work? Is that why they went with the Phenergan? Benadryl is nice and cheap and can be bought over the counter...and works great.

The Promethazine shouldn't cause him to be restless though, usually it causes sedation (much like Benadryl will).

He was taking Tavist and it's not helping with the allergies. The vet today prescribed the other. I haven't given it to him and I don't think I will. I read it's very sedating and I'm afraid Alan will have a reaction to it. Maybe I will try benadryl.

I used to take that for nausea when I had a migraine. It was very effective for the nausea, but made me very, very dopey!
