Cleaning Grey's Ears

Does anyone do this and, if so, how?

Just gently wipe the gunk out with a baby wipe. Some dogs need it more than others.

Don't poke anything down in the ear. You can use a q-tip for the crevices as long as you are VERY careful and don't shove it in the ear canal. I just use it for the outside of the ear.

Also, there are rinses that you can put in their ears, but if you do this, do it outside in old clothes. Your vet can give you one, I believe you can buy them OTC at pet stores, or you can make your own.

If you do a search on greytalk, you'll find some different things people use.

I've always been told though, unless it smells bad and looks very bad, that you should pretty much leave them alone. We clean out a couple times a year with baby wipes and haven't had any problems. :)

George is a gunk machine in his left ear. He's had surgery and several rounds of meds. Somthing about how his eustation tube doesn't drain his ear wax properly.

Anyway.

To clean his ears we take him outside on the back porch. Squirt dog ear cleaner liquid in the ear. Massage and rub the ear really well for about 30 seconds with the ear flap folded over to hold in the liquid. Turn human head away from dog. Release hand from dog's head and let dog shake out the liquid and gunk. Dry exterior of dog and human gently and throughly with hand towels. Dry interior of dog ear with cotton balls.

Repeat as necessary, usually every one to two weeks.

I clean mine out all the time. I get Otoptic, put some on a cotton ball and clean the ear out. I never stick anything down in the ear.

I don't see anything in the ears except a little dirt on the edge of the inside of one ear. This just got me to

wondering.

It's all an individual thing. Copper gets so much gunk he has a whole potatoe patch in a few months, and we clean his ears about every 4-6 weeks. The other two are fine with the once yearly cleaning at the grey wash fundraiser. I always thought it was partly due to the fact that Copper will lay down flat out, on any surface, if he stands still for more than 30 seconds - he's the laziest greyhound that way - so he lays in dirt (or less clean spaces!) a lot!

I clean Dash's ears once a week, he's a pretty waxy guy. Q'tesh is only about once a month.

Gently drip in (don't squirt it, you'll never get near them again!) the ear cleaner, massage it around (till you hear it "squishing") stand back while they shake it out, then wipe it out with a cotton ball or kleenex. I use a q-tip to gently remove anything stuck in the little crevices, but again, only what you can see, don't poke down into the ear canal.

Dash loves getting his ears done, gets rid of the itchies, so he stands completely still. Q'tesh is a bit of a wiggle-bum, so I do hers while she is lying down.

We have to clean Kool Aid's ears probably every few months, he gets almost looks like dirt in his ear, and it gets fairly thick. We just use Q-tips. He loves it, He actually just lays on the bed and lets us do it and when it's time to do the other ear he turns over for us.

Conner's on the other hand, we have had him for just over a year and have never had to clean them.

If you don't have ear cleaner you can use half and half of white vinegar and water.

Ear gunk depends on the hound. Carolina's ears are gunk city and Jake doesn't usually have any.

Lucy had some dirt in the top part of one ear last night and a baby wipe took care of it.
