Holy Cow indeed! :bighug

I've been monitoring this thread and have been sending you and Shanti many healing thoughts, but I had nothing substantive to add to solve the problem so I have not posted.

I do hope Shanti is improving fast and that the antibiotics are balanced right. It does sound like an opportunistic Staph. infection. Oweee! Poor both of you.

And I'm totally over-whelmed by your tail wrapping skills. I couldn't do that! Not the ick factor (been there done that) but the skilled wrap. Care to share how you do it?

Again, :bighug

Back to watching the thread . . . Our positive thoughts are with you and Shanti!

I am pleased you like my wrap job! I had many, many years of wrapping horse legs. Same concept, just a lot smaller. :) I did learn it is easier with her standing. Last nights looks nice, but a little crooked on the taped ends. :P

I just start at the top and work my way down. I overlap about 1/2 the wrap each time. The first layer is ointment and stick free pads. I secured those with "sensitive skin" tape. Then there is a layer of padded gauze wrapped like the vet wrap. Then the pretty purple vet wrap to match her collar. :P Tomorrow we have to change colors. A little athletic tape to secure the top and bottom. Then some Yuck spray to keep her from chewing. The last 2 nights she has left her tail alone, but keeps trying to chew her belly.

I took another picture of her tail last night. That way I can see the progress. Not much yet.

Remolacha, (Jan), the bite not collar got here. THANK YOU!!!!!!!! She is sound asleep again right now so I will have to put it on when she is awake and messing with her belly. When I can monitor her constantly, I let her have some freedom. You are awesome, Shanti and I really appreciate it!

Just wondering how Shanti is doing this morning

We slept!!! She is very clingy!!! Her belly keeps improving, but not cleared yet. I did not re-wrap her tail yesterday. So I need to do it today. She feels fevered again. She ate a little boiled chicken for breakfast, no kibble again. I am going to call the vet again today to see if I should cleanse the tail and belly with something. It stinks! And it is very gooey. Lucy mentioned she uses special shampoo for Riley. I will have to ask about that.

I am hoping for some results today. Thanks for checking in on my girl. :)

When I have a tail problem, I use an old fashioned hair roller to put over the sore spot. Then wrap using the method Batmom told you leaving a small opening for air to get in to help heal. Also use a muzzle with tape over some of the openings or a poop muzzle.

Another evening, another bandage change. :P My friend Meghan (she is a vet tech) came by to help as Scott is at the fire station. She brought all kinds of goodies. We cleaned it gently and re-wrapped it. It looks a lot better tonight! We did not use lidocaine tonight as she really did not need it. Now it does not smell so bad either.

This was from the other night. It looks even better now.

I was hoping to get results today, but none arrived. :( Hopefully tomorrow.

Shanti is learning to lift her tail really high when she goes to lay down. I had to laugh I about threw her outside thinking she was going to potty on her bed! :o She was trying to get down pain free with a non-bending tail. :P

Don't give up until you try manuka honey. Make sure it is the REAL one and not a copy cat version-I think Manuka Honey Usa is reliable. There have been several studies-a lot with humans- that have shown it sometimes heals wounds that nothing else does. In fact I believe it is the only treatment that has been proven effective against MRSLA. I am a chemist and this is legit to the best of my knowledge. I'll be praying for her speedy recovery.

I believe the belly is a completely different issue. I have seen similar on some hounds that I cleared up and didn't return by swabbing with high strength (95%) alcohol once or twice a day.

I've also heard good things about Manuka Honey. You may want to try Manuka Honey USA.

Here's one website that tells how it helped a greyhound heal a major wound: Piper's story

Here's another: Tegan's story

I hope Shanti starts to heal up soon....poor girl has been through so much!

Well, apparently Meg does not wrap as tight as I do. Early this morning it was on, when I came back down it was off. I found it just inside the dog door, fully wrapped still. :P We were thinking it might be best to shave the tail as the hair was making a mess, no need. The hair fell out! I re-wrapped her in yet another color. She did not move or care any more that I messed with it. So that means it is feeling A LOT better! Her thighs look better and her belly is looking better.

This mornings picture: A little rat tail.

I just scheduled her specialist/surgeon consult for Tuesday, 10am. I can't feed her after midnight even for a consult. We are hoping that Dr. Eich will see her and have some brilliant non-surgical solution. :D He has dealt with these problems a lot! If I remember correctly, he had a grey with this type of issue. He has consulted on her, but not seen her in person. We are hoping that physically seeing her might make something stand out.

Wholly Moses! I wasn't on for a day or two and all this development with poor Shanti!! I cannot believe what that sore on her tail turned into! What a nightmare! And that poor sweet Shanti! What a terrible thing to go through. I will keep your precious girl in my prayers. I pray that they find out what the heck is going on and cure the problem immediately! Stay strong Mom! Tiger, Bueller and Domino are sending Shanti some get well doggie kisses too!

Well the first set of results are in!!! It is a staph infection as suspected. It is sensitive to the antibiotics she is on so we are going to refill those. We are waiting for the second set of "slow growing" cultures to come back in a couple days. Strangely the tail and belly are staph yet so different. She has a new blister on her belly, but everything else appears to be healing. For some reason now though her tail wraps keep falling off. Maybe since there is no hair for friction? I hate to stick tape to what is left of her hair. Lord knows it will just fall out too.

I will keep you all posted on our progress. Thanks for the support!

I HATE that tape. I refuse to use it. Maybe you could use a small velcro strip to hold the wrap in place. Nancy sent me one to hold a sock on Misty and I'm just looking at it and I bet it would work on the tail. She said Home Depot has them. If I had an extra one I'de send it

I might have one for the boat, but it might be too big. I will go check. The whole wrap is just sliding off. She is not messing with it. I actually just talked to Dr. Herrera. She does not think that the infection went deep enough to damage the hair follicles so hopefully her hair on her tail will grow back. Did not think of that! She could be a cute rat from now on. It will go with her bald thighs. :P

We will continue on the antibiotics for 1 week AFTER all signs have gone away and she is healed up.
