RobinM Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 (edited) I believe Chloe has a UTI. She has peed in the bedroom on the carpet 2x since last night and is peeing more on walks. I asked DH to get a sample while on a walk after dinner and when she went to squat 3 drops came out and it's pretty dark. Vet can not see us tonight. They are booked which is uncommon, but it is what it is. I can bring her in tomorrow night. But NOW, there is a problem. I can collect more urine as the night goes on and bring it in but I would like to start treating it. I have 400 mg of amocillin, 375 mg of clavamox and other antibiotics. Suggestions? Guest BlackandBrindle Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Personally, I'd wait just because different bacterias react to different antibiotics. We started Sadie on *of course now I can't remember the name* on Friday before the culture results were back and then ended up changing on Monday to another antibiotic because the bacteria she had was resistant to the first antibiotic. I'm also leery of treating with antibiotics without consulting the vet but that comes from a childhood of having it drilled into my head that antibiotics were serious stuff. Hope Chloe feels better soon. I know Uti's are miserable. Quote
Jackandgrey Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Can you just collect a sample and take it in? They shouldn't need to see her. Don't start an antibiotic prior to the urine being tested. RobinM Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 I will get a sample and drop it off, I have to wait for her to go. The vet's office closes at 9 so we have some time. Is this instant results? Guest mountain4greys Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 (edited) Yes. He can give you the results while you're there. I hope she feels better soon. Edited just cuz. Edited June 17, 2008 by mountain4greys Quote
CaliforniaGreys Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Robin, if you can, try to get the sample mid-stream. And you don't need a lot of urine. You may want to call the vet's office and make sure someone can look at the sample and not wait until morning. They should be able to give you the results right away, but hopefully they will also grow a culture which may add an antibiotic. Guest mzmazzei Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 They can test to see of there is bacteria in the urine quickly. It is my experience, however, that the urine culture to verify which antibiotic to use takes a couple days. Good luck- we've had similar problems recently with our greyhound. It's no fun for you or your houndie. Quote
RobinM Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 Vet called. Said to bring sample in either before 9 tonight or after refrigeration, in the morning. I can start her on Clavamox after I get the sample. Sigh. It's always something. Guest LynnM Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Wait, because antibiotic resistance is WAY worse than waiting 12 hours to start antibiotics. Don't bother with collecting urine... it's only good for about 2 hours after collection. Get it as close to the appointment as you can. Lynn Quote
6greyhounds Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Hope you get the urine sample to the vet. I know from experience not to start an antibiotic until you have the urine sample and as someone said in a previous post some UTI's do not respond to certain antibiotics just like humans don't Quote It is better to have loved and lostThan never to have loved at allMissing my Big Blue eyed Bear

ahicks51 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Just to answer the question- Jake's urine showed no bugs, but that's not uncommon with UTIs. The doc prescribed a 10-day course of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SXT); after the first pill- no more messes on the carpet. We finished the course, naturally, but it was amazing how fast it seemed to take hold. Quote Coco (Maze Cocodrillo) Minerva (Kid's Snipper)
