Guest mzmazzei
We have a 9 yr old 60# female greyhound. She's had some urinary tract problems (UTI & incontinence) over the last 14 months and was also extremely low thyroid .33 last December. She had surgery April 2007 - episioplasty. Added Soloxine for the thyroid in December. Thus far, the urinary tract tests are ambiguous. Protein to creatine is slightly elevated in gray area. Did a recheck on the thyroid and she's still only at .6 Does anyone have any experience with hypothyroidism mascarading as early kidney failure? feemandvm
You cannot diagnose hypothyroidism in a Greyhound based only on a T4. Plenty of studies have shown NORMAL Greyhounds can have levels low enough that they challenge the accuracy of the test. IF kidney function was borderline... I would be more worried about if the thyroid supplement was truly necessary as excessive amounts of thyroid hormone could be hard on the kidneys. Guest mzmazzei
Fiona had a full thyroid panel done in December. She was definitely hypothyroid, with lethargy, balding tail, extremely slow hair re-growth from last IV shave patch during dental. She was on .3mg twice daily. Due to the continuation of the balding, slow hair re-growth, lethargy and her T-4 is down some from her last blood tests for dental in February, we've increased the Soloxine to .45mg twice daily. I don't have exact numbers - BUN/Creatine slightly elevated - not worrysome. Protein/Creatine is in a gray area - slightly elevated, but not significant. So far we are just increasing the Soloxine and watching for results. Other option on the table is to put her on a kidney health diet food and possibly ultrasound the kidneys. The UTI symptoms began summer 2007 - treatment was antibiotics, then PPA/Proin. The Soloxine wasn't added until December 2007 and we still have occasional incontinence, while still on PPA.
