I have a 4yr old fawn female . I live in Hickory NC. About 3 weeks ago Macy bolted upthe stairs before I could turn the stairwell lights on and she broke off 1 nail, broke another at the edge of the foot and cracked the others. The vet said she would be ok but I am worried . She is still limping and licking the foot. When she is walking in the grass she seems to have great pain in her foot ,but on pavement she walks ok. I took he to the vet twice no infection or anything like that. Just a worried Daddy I guess. Anybody have any help for me to understand the problem ? She is as friendly as if there is nothing wrong and eats like a horse. Just concerned. Thanks for the help

Poor Macy! That's gotta hurt the precious girl! My Bueller had his dew claw nail ripped completely down to his fur. It just bled like crazy initially. It took quite a while for a new nail to show up back in it's place. Like months if I remember correctly. And it's still quite a bit shorter than his other nails. Bueller is not much of a wound licker, so I don't recall him bothering it much. We had it wrapped for a couple weeks, then left it open for the air to get to it. Bueller did not limp, obviously because the nail was his dew, so he was lucky that he didn't have to walk on it like your poor girl. I wish I had some better advice for you. I'm sure someone else on the board has experienced this and will post. As long as the vet says there's no infection, that's one good thing. I'm guessing that the grass must be poking at the sore spot and irritating it a bit on the nail and that's why she's limping in the grass and not on pavement. I'll keep your sweet Macy in my prayers for a quick painless recovery. But be patient, because it did take a LONG time for Bueller's nail to grow back. I was beginning to wonder if it ever would!

Don't panic. Last summer Darrel ripped off a nail on his rear leg...blood all over my house! Believe me..it looked worse than it was. This year...same nail...right off...no blood, bandaged for 10 days. Yes, he licks it , but it's healing. In other words...all things being equal...sounds normal to me. I feel your pain

Poor Macy! Doc ripped off a dewclaw once, but that wasn't nearly as problematic because it wasn't in contact with the ground thereafter. We kept it unwrapped so the air could get to it and I cleaned it with saline solution 2 or 3 times a day - he did his best to keep it clean too, by licking! I think it took about 3 weeks for it to grow back over the quick, but longer to get back to normal length of course.

However I thought it worth mentioning one suggestion for cracked/missing nails that I have read on another greyhound forum, one used by a lot of trainers and breeders. That is to paint the quick with Friar's Balsam (available here from pharmacists, maybe not in the States?) or one of those preparations for hardening human nails. The coating then protects the quick from further painful knocks as it heals. I've not tried it myself but you could always run the idea past your vet.

Clare with Tiger (Snapper Gar, b. 18/05/2015), and remembering Ken (Boomtown Ken, 01/05/2011-21/02/2020) and Doc (Barefoot Doctor, 20/08/2001-15/04/2015).

"It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753.

ouch :( my sheltie caught his nail one year and ripped the thing off, lots of blood, lots of wound care powder and zinc etc, lots of bandages. we didn't go to the vet cause it was a typical nail loss, it healed eventually, and has sort of grown back after a fashion.

so long as infection stays away your dog should be fine. :)

The first day I brought Sailor home I noticed something was wrong with one of his toes and there was a little bit of blood in my car. I took him to the vet the next day and the vet told me the nail was ripped off, but the quick still remained, so she clipped the quick off, which hurt and there was blood everywhere. His toe nail grew back fast tho. after a week it stopped bleeding and about a month it started growing back just fine. Now I cant even tell which toe nail was the one that was ripped off ;)
